My neighbor and bike riding buddy headed off yesterday for a backpacking trip deep into the wilderness. The problem is, she has a top-of-the-line Tesla Model X but there is zero electricity available at her destination and it's about a 300 mile trip in and out of the trailhead from the nearest 240v electric plug. So, she asked to trade cars for the week. After much consideration I said sure, I'll trade my 2008 SUV for a nearly new $90,000 Tesla. Yipee! This is one sweet vehicle. I feel like I'm in a sci-fi movie driving it around. It is soooo smooth, and so amazingly fast, amongst many other cool aspects of the vehicle. It is going to be a complete drag going back to the old ride.

I have often said, once you drive a Tesla it’s hard to go back to anything else. This is something many other car makers just don’t get. Very similar situation back in the day with Apple products. I used to tell my family (cousins, etc.) once you go Mac, you’ll never go back. Today, with the exception of one cousin, every one of them are Mac users.

This is how it started for me. Girlfriend's sister and her husband (both HS teachers) preached the virtues of Mac early on. I didn't get it.... until I had the chance to use one in 1986. No looking back after that.

I've never been in a Tesla. I also don't personally know of anyone who has been in a Tesla. I see them on the road though, so I know they exist. I sometimes play a game on long drives. What will I see more of on the road? PT Cruisers or Teslas. Hey, I didn't say it was a particularly exciting game.

We recently got a Nissan Leaf+ (with the 62kwh battery & 240m range) for under $30K, and while I have never driven a Tesla I now fully appreciate the acceleration of an electric only vehicle. I also avoid driving our Prius V, which is also a very efficient and nice car in it's own right, but what a dog compared to the Leaf!

Still, it's good to have a larger car that can also go farther without stopping.

Nissan Leaf had issues with battery thermal management in previous generations, I hope the current model addresses that. When I charge the Chevy Volt in the garage I hear the fans running most of the time. I think they cool the battery.

The Cybertruck is even less expensive. It starts at $40k and seats 6 adults. MY supposedly seats 7, but I think 4 friends or 5 frenemies is more plausible. The M3 has an off-menu option that I believe starts at $37k, but it's really stripped down, you have to call and ask for that option.

The Leaf is still passively cooled, aka forced air while you drive. Not a real concern for most regions. I drove ~80 miles yesterday in 90º temps and the battery temperature gauge was right in the middle when I got back home. Now I have heard that level 3 (DC) charging will also heat up the battery, and the car will automatically slow the charge rate down to compensate as needed, so definitely something to consider if you are needing to fast charge multiple times while traveling on the road in high temps.

EDIT: all that said, it would be great if they could add a fan, like how much would that cost?

Agreed, once you drive a one-speed electric you will never want to go back to a clunky ICE. The change over from ICE to EV will happen quickly once enough people test drive one. I’m hoping for breakthroughs in super capacitors.

I hear you on the looks of the original Leaf, but I think the current gen. is pretty sharp, yet plain enough to not obviously be an electric unless you have it plugged in:

I spotted two Tesla Y's last Wednesday. I couldn't see the plates.
One was a nice metallic green and the other white.
The appearance of the front end will be discussed.

I just drove a friend 1000 miles in his new Model Y from Sacramento to Tucson, where he lives. I have over 150,000 miles in a little over 5 years in 2 different Model S's. The Model Y is a GREAT Compact SUV. If I were buying new now, I would choose the Model Y over my Model S (which I absolutely love).
I am a car guy from way back, owning SAABs and Porsches. Once I drove a Model S, it was all over for traditional cars, for me.
Once Tesla releases the single motor, two wheel drive Model Y it will be $39,000 for the standard range version.
Thew Long Range, Dual Motor version gets 316 miles of range and is just under $60,000.
There are so many features that make Tesla a compelling choice.
1. All Models are rated safest cars tested in the insurance institute for occupant safety.
2 Amazing Performance-Model S Performance 0-60MPH in under 2.3 seconds-It actually hurts to accelerate that fast!
3. Tesla vs other electric cars--extensive charging network https://supercharge.info/map
4.The technology of everything including self driving is incredible, and ever evolving.

Have some fun, you can visit a Tesla Showroom and do a "Contactless" test drive. They give you the car for around 20 minutes without them in the car. Go to https://www.tesla.com/drive

Mazda does have an EV coming. MX30. Based on the 3/CX30 platform. Smaller. slower motor than comparable EV's. Why? To save battery life and thus use a smaller battery.

I think its a step backwards, no cheaper than a Leaf, but shorter ranged.

OTOH, it's a really good looking little CUV/EV.
