My wife's uncle was Tiburcio Carias Andino, he was president of Honduras from 1933-1949, creating the National Party in the process. He would be their FDR.

The best I can offer up for me was from 350 years ago - Marie Grandin (1651-1715), she was a Filles du Roi (King's Daughter). That made her one of 768 women who King Louis XIV of France sent to help colonize New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673. I can only imagine what Quebec was like when she arrived only 50-60 years after it was founded.

Closer in time would be my father, James Alfred Thompson, he was on the first bobsled down the 1932 run at Lake Placid, NY. His army group built the run in advance of the Olympics. In 1937, he was a Sitdown Striker against GM in Flint, Mi to become a founding member of the United Auto Workers.

My aunt did genealogy research and determined we're somehow related to a founder of the green bay packers. I assume most of the state can make such a claim.

Now, I'm adopted, so no effing idea. But my "family" on dad's side, believe it or not, Torvald the Lustfull, Viking pillager king. And several that came over on the Mayflower. Might be some crossing over of family tree branches in the 1600s. Mom is a direct descendant of Governor John H. Mickey of Nebraska. We have a very large sterling tea service from the governor's mansion with the Nebraska seal on it. And I have an invitation card for when his daughter Mary Nain Mickey, the sponsor and christener of the USS Nebraska BB-16, built here in Seattle. Part of the Great Fleet.

Marty Sklar was my father's cousin. He was one of the top people at Disney. He started as editor of the newspaper that was published and distributed on Main St Disneyland and rose to be the guy in charge of the parks worldwide. He was an awesome guy. Once I made him tell me the whole story. It took over an hour and it was really amazing.

I remember going to his place as a kid in the late 60s and he would entertain the kids by showing Disney cartoons in the garage. A movie projector and a screen. This was 20 years before everyone had a VCR in their home - my friends didn't believe me when I told them.

My great great Uncle - Sir John Monash
General Sir John Monash, GCMG, KCB, VD; 27 June 1865 – 8 October 1931) was a civil engineer and an Australian military commander of the First World War. He commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade before the war and then, shortly after its outbreak, became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt, with whom he took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916 he took charge of the newly raised 3rd Division in northwestern France and in May 1918 became commander of the Australian Corps, at the time the largest corps on the Western Front. The successful allied attack at the Battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918 was planned by Monash and spearheaded by British forces including the Australian and Canadian Corps under Monash and Arthur Currie. Monash is considered one of the best allied generals of the First World War and the most famous commander in Australian history.

He has a statue in Melbourne of him on a horse. When we were kids, and we played Monopoly, we all wanted the horse playing piece because of that.

My great grandfather - Wilhelm Fliess
Wilhelm Fliess was a German Jewish otolaryngologist who practised in Berlin. He developed highly eccentric theories of human biorhythms and a possible nasogenital connection that have not been accepted by modern scientists. He is today best remembered for his close personal friendship and theoretical collaboration with Sigmund Freud, a controversial chapter in the history of psychoanalysis.

Not exactly famous - but Uncle Henry was known for his 8 wives (not all at once) and was known at the lodge as Henry the 8th

Uncle who was a lead chemist on the Manhattan Project.

Even among the various distinguished and honored and award-winning ones, he's acknowledged to have been the most important. He saved the world.

Dad was honored by Baraboo, WI as the "six million dollar man" because of the money he had a hand in acquiring for the hospital, the Methodist Church, the Baraboo Housing Authority (has a low income apartment building named for him), and the Baraboo Development Corp. Probably some other organizations that were better off because of him. He may have had an impact on the early growth of the Circus World Museum on the grounds of the Ringling Bros Circus.

Oh, my mom semi-confirmed that my grandfather was at least partly the basis for the sawmill manager in Twin Peaks by saying the show was trash and refusing to watch it (even though Snoqualmie Falls was 150 miles away, and the location Agent Cooper identified* seems to be Metaline Falls, Eastern WA).

I had an uncle (no joke) who wrote a book, some would say THE book, on quantum mechanics. Interesting in no small part for the fact that he was a bio/organic chemist, and not a physicist.

And one of my nephews is slowly but surely making a mark as a filmmaker. He's got a documentary which is currently at #5 on iTunes list of documentaries. I haven't seen it myself yet, but I've heard it's good and the reviews seem to agree.

The most interesting person I knew was my wife's late father. He was a physicist; taught at Kansas University for decades. One of his summer research projects was to find the temperature of the moon's surface using red shift, back in the 60s. He was almost finished when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. He was also an accomplished violinist, playing from the age of 6 until a stroke at the age of 92. He was an avid birdwatcher and traveler. When the weather was bad in Kansas, he and his wife went down to the apartment they kept in Mexico. He designed and built a synthesizer for a violin. Late in life as a widower, he went blind, but still entertained. He was the kindest man I ever met, and was the quintessential absent-minded professor.

Both my parents were single children, so no direct aunts, uncles cousins. 23andMe says the lineage is mainly Swede and northern European with a lot of action across that North Sea.

Walt Disney is (was) a distant cousin. There’s a family tree chart at the Disney Family Museum, and surnames do line up.

Chevy Chase, MD was founded by my ancestor with a land grant from the Baron of Baltimore. His grandfather arrived in the New World as an indentured slave in 1632.

I have the linked ancestor's autobiography somewhere. My aunt has his battle sword from the civil war. His troops loved him because he was careful and didn't get them slaughtered.

My dad is well known in the field of Flood prediction for his seminal work on the Missouri river flood in 1972 (I helped him with some of his field work and analyses), and his scientific proofs that the current (and still) flood control methods make floods worse. His 1973 paper gets cited all over the place.

Dad's brother's work on fossil organisms is cited in a variety of studies that helped prove plate tectonics. He did a lot of work in Canada and the Outer Hebrides. Entirely coincidentally he had more red hair than his brothers, his wife is a red head, and all four of his daughters are red heads. They were often mistaken for locals in the islands. My cousins had quite the scottish burr when they came back after a couple of years.

And my grandfather is famous in a small part of Long Island for saving the Shinnecock Indian territory from a rapacious developer who tried to steal it from them in the 60's. He rallied the locals and got the whole corrupt scheme involving local government officials overturned. The tribe made him an honorary chieftain for it, and he would attend their annual ceremonies in his full outfit. Which went back to the tribe upon his death.


And finally there was a poorly known outlaw in the Oklahoma territory who was probably related, who robbed a few stages and then worked as a school teacher. And was known for shooting the clock in the schoolhouse because it annoyed him. I can relate to him when the alarm goes off in the morning.

Wife is related to James Madison's (4th US President) wife Dolley.

My Great Great Grandfather was the mayor of McKees Rocks, PA. There are two streets named after him and his wife, Frank and Lilly. He was also the owner of a regional wagon manufacturing business.

My like 7 times over grandpa was a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War. Left France with Lafayette at age 14, stayed on here in the USA, went on to work a whaling ship then a cabinetmaker on the east coast. His wife was given a revolutionary war spousal pension.

I have a cousin who is an actor. He was in a soap opera for a few years and has had a few movie roles. My wife's mother's family are descended from a very famous "wild west lawman". Same last name.

My dad basically invented something that's probably in a lot of your houses. He didn't become rich from it (but his company made a LOT of money from it), but he was given a substantial bonus. After his passing, I was able to estimate it was probably in the mid six figures.

I am 6th cousins with John Rockefeller IV. Which, if you know your math and genealogy, makes me 999,999th in line for the $$. We do share the middle name though it'll die with me as nobody on our branch has it anywhere and my late great aunt was the last with it as a surname.
