Well this is a first.

Purchase a new MacBookA9,9,1 from Apple 2 months ago for my wife.

For the past week, the unit's been suddenly shutting down about once a day, and restarting the Panic Medic Boot window.

This morning it started shutting down many times and finally wouldn't start at all.

I did a google dive and discovered and followed these suggestions from this particular Apple Discussion:

1. Shut down and disconnect all externals

2. Reset the SMC 3 times

3. Reset the NVRAM 3 times

4. Booted into Safe Mode, and the restarted

(I continued to get Panics intermittently throughout these steps)

5. Downloaded and installed a free utility (new to me) called Etrecheck. and ran the test.

No major things were found, but it did point out a few minor things they didn't like. They all turned up in a single folder, ~/Library/LaunchAgents/. They were from fairly innocuous apps, such as GoToMeeting and Google Software, but deleted them any way. Restarted and ran Etrecheck again, and it found nothing.

6. Then downloaded and ran Malwarebytes just for kicks, and it found nothing.

Still getting Panics periodically.

I'm thinking that this now has to be a hardware issue.

Apple stores around us are all closed, so I've chosen to do their phone process, and am on hold now.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open. Here's the Etre

Two months old and having panics...

Step one: call apple

when it comes to new hardware, I don't mess around. I don't search the net for fixes. I get apple on the phone and then get the computer to apple asap.

Look in the /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports folder for panic logs which will have file names that end with the word "panic."

At this point, you should have several of them.

Some logs will show last loaded/unloaded kexts and active BSD processes, recorded at the time of the crash.

One quick way to find the cause of multiple panics is to look for items that consistently come up in the panic reports under those three categories.

You won't always see the same things listed there, and some panic reports are useless dumps of binary data. But the first step to diagnose a panic is to check the panic reports.

When it displays a message saying that there's a 3rd party extension that's preventing booting, I'm not sure that hardware would be the first thing that I'd point the finger at.

The kernel panic logs should have interesting information.

I see there are at least a few third party extensions loaded. I'd do a erase and internet restore and see if it still panics.

I also agree. Consider backing up with Carbon Copy Cloner before doing so, though.

I'm also having a problem with kernel panics, but I think its my titanium PowerBook G4 overheating from the WPA2 compatible Linksys PCMCIA wifi card I have in it. I get about 15 minutes out of it before the panics happen. Too bad - I prefer using this to my MBP2017. Better hit "Post Message" before it happens again.

I suggest you start by taking a clone backup, verify that it will boot the computer, then nuke'n'pave and see how the system behaves. If it runs okay on a virgin system, suspect one or more of the listed items.

Sunday morning update. After a stellar and really impressive phone support call with Apple (including using a built-in screenshare system they have with a red pointy arrow that you can both see), and going through some additional hard ware tests, I deleted all the 3rd party apps, and did a reinstall. So far so good.

I'd been using all these 3rd party apps for years on my machines (2013 MacPro and 2015 MBAir) with nary a problem. I suspect the new Apple T2 security chip's different design just doesn't dance with some of these apps. Lesson learned.

The T2 chip doesn't do anything that would cause a panic like you described.

Most likely, one or more of your apps simply wasn't updated for Catalina.

As Sarcany says, you need to address the problems causing the panic, as described in the Diagnostic logs.

I had a similar problem with many panics in my 2018 Mac mini. Called Apple expecting warranty help but was guided back to proving it was not software causing the problems.

I disconnected all peripherals except keyboard and mouse. Logs pointed to Gmail app and USB Overdrive, so I got rid of those for starters. I used AppCleaner (free) to do this because I wanted to get rid of the stuff those two install in the System. It did enough that the panics went away. Apple was right - not a hardware problem at all. The apps need to be updated or reinstalled or something to make them compatible. I'm getting along without them.

Apple's transition operating systems have historically been pretty bad experiences.

We've arguably had three transition-operating systems in a row. APFS in High Sierra, and more APFS and security changes in Mojave, and then Catalina with the split volume scheme and firmlinks and deprecated extensions and killing 32-bit apps and important apps replaced with half-finished Catalyst apps.

And now there's yet another transition OS coming (Big Sur) along with the ARM chip migration, promising to kill all of your apps that rely upon kernel extensions.

More than ever, it's important to check compatibility and upgrade all of your critical apps *before* upgrading the OS or buying a new Mac.

RAM Doubler runs best on a 68030 with clean ROMs. It will work on your Mac LC, but ideally you'd run it on nothing less than a IIsi with at least 32MB of "real" RAM.

If you upgrade to RAM Doubler 9, you can run it on a PPC Mac, but beware that there's a bug that can interrupt AppleTalk connections. Turn on on TCP/IP in the Chooser.

I always chuckle at mentions like this, but it also brings up PTSD, from the nightmare of the OS 6 and 7 days. Lost docs, crashes, stuff I could never figure out (remember configuring a printer?). Apple's decision to go with the linuxy'sh BSD code base (apologies I'm not a coder so I'm talking out my feet here). They saved the day.
