Triple Whammy
Posted by: Frank

I've been learning how to cope with my wife's alzhiemers trip, now at the moderate level, she is so confused and anxious,
combined with the pandemic, and now ... hurricane Douglas is about to hit Kauai. I've done everything I could think of to protect our house and yard ... and us.
Please send some good thoughts, I'm in need.

Living in Japan, I've experienced hurricanes, some quite close. They're not fun. We have a special needs daughter who is usually quite calm, but becomes distraught when the weather is stormy. As long as she's with me and I remain calm, even joking with her lightly, she is OK. Praying for you and your wife.

You've done well to protect your house and family. Now figure out the most secure part of the house away from possible broken windows and wait it out together. Speaking of windows, have you boarded up or taped them? Here in Japan, most places have sliding shutters to guard windows from flying objects in a storm.

I had a 3M film applied to our windows years ago. It makes the glass somewhat like a laminated glass storefront window so a projectile hitting the window just makes a small hole (hopefully). We have an interior room without windows where we can be secure.
Thanks for your prayers.

Yeah, shattering from a projectile is what you want to guard against. Sounds good. If the interior room feels cramped and causes stress, another possible place would be on the side of the house opposite of wind direction. Of course still not close to a large window. Depends on your house layout. Will you have internet access to track the storm if power goes out?

Whew! The latest update on the path of the hurricane shows that it just jogged north after passing Oahu and will likely pass by Kauai with little damage. The hurricane is actually strengthening but its course has changed just enough to probably spare us. I'll sleep more easily after 2AM. Its 11:24 right now.
To answer your question, Drew, I would only have internet service as long as my UPS would be able to power my cable modem.

So, no internet through a cell phone? Well, it's good news about the path change. They do that. Japanese weather forecasting is very good, but typhoons (what they call them here) are fickle and difficult to predict even hour by hour. Hang in there.

Glad it moved so you aren’t in the direct path. Hang in there and stay dry.

Hey Frank, hope that the worst has passed. Does music help with your wife's anxiety? It didn't do much for my mom, but helped my neighbor's mom a lot — especially if she could sing along. Best wishes always! smiley-signs003

Frank (and family),

Good thoughts also coming to you and yours from British Columbia.

Might I recommend a book? Am reading “The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline” by Dale E. Bredersen, MD. It was mentioned in “Successful Aging” by Daniel Levitin. (I’m a sucker for popular books dealing with neuroscience.)

I can already see following some of the recommendations from Dr. Bredersen and can imagine going visiting the book again.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It means a LOT. Thank goodness the eye passed us by. It was just 50 miles from Lihue as it approached but that was enough since it continued to move a little northward as it passed Kauai. We slept late and this morning is just rainy and a little windy. The Wailua River below our house is running high so we got a few inches overnight. Nothing like the rain bomb we got last year when Haena got over 40 inches in one 24 hour period. Looking out over our yard it looks like nothing happened. We're so lucky. I thought that the roof over our lanai might blow off but all is ok.

Music is transformative for Laura. We sing songs every day that we grew up with and listen to familiar music most of the day. It really calms her down.

So good to hear that the most intense part of the storm decided to dodge your area! I like to think of you and your wife singing songs together. Peace.

Franks - sending prayers your way. Glad the storm missed you. You are very lucky to be living on Kauai.

Leaving the radio on in the house is helpful and keeps our spirits up for the wife and I.
