Across the plate from the mound? Throwing a ball 60 feet to an area the width of a keyboard is VERY DIFFICULT. You have one shot. With all eyes and cameras on you. Unless you throw baseballs regularly it ain't gonna happen. Not across the plate.

The ceremonial first pitch DOES NOT need to be a scorching fastball right down the middle of the plate. It is usually a soft pitch, with lots of help from the catcher to make sure it ends up in his mitt.

Always better to overthrow it....

I would say it's better to under-throw it. Let it bounce in front of the catcher. It looks worse when the catcher has to jump like a wide receiver, miss and then have to run after it

Any way you throw the ball, at 60 ft, it's extremely difficult to cross the plate. When you're on the mound and you look at home plate, it's a SMALL area to hit. But thank you for the strangely unnecessary explanation of what a first pitch is.

If Luis Tiant can throw 60 MPH balls successfully in actual Major League games, I can try to do the same for a single First Pitch.
With Luis, his body motions and wind-up did more to cross-up batters than his pitch.

Haha. My mom just bought my kid a Tiant shirt. I tried to explain Luis' wind up. Not successful. I'll have to show them a video.
