Could you throw out the "First Pitch" without embarrassing yourself

I used to be a pitcher, but I never threw from 60'6" like in MLB. I would measure off the distance in the back yard and practice a few pitches. If I didn't have it, I would stand closer so it popped a little in the catcher' mitt. The positive from that would offset the negative of not being on the rubber. You don't want to throw from the rubber and have it bounce in front of the catcher.

Yes, it would have a nice arc but I could throw it without the catcher having to chase it. Of course, with tens of thousands of fans in the stands or even just players from two major league teams watching, all bets are off. I would definitely practice in my backyard.

Nope. And never would have been able to. I was lucky to be able to throw some underhand pitches to my son so he could practice batting. Isolated childhood and my old man was from the old country and didn't know from baseball. He taught me how to dig a posthole and put up a good fence tho. if you needed a fence, I was your guy.

You don't need to hit the strike zone with a 95 mph fastball. From the couple of times I went to fairs, most regular people can't pitch over 62 mph. With 40 pitches of practice over two days, I think I could get a ball between the limits of the batter's boxes without bouncing it.

The 79 year old had hurt his arm practicing throwing the day before. Committing the worst sin in throwing the first pitch. Trying to give it extra oomph. Which is never good. He was a Yankees fan growing up in Brooklyn.

Absolutely! I can throw a "first pitch" and it would positively suck. No doubt about it. Would it be embarrassing? Nope! I'd expect it to be a horrendously awful pitch and rejoice in the sheer fun of throwing it. 'course, I'd give everyone involved a warning in advance that I can't pitch for the life of me and it'd suck. If they still let me throw the first pitch and they're embarrassed at the results, well, sucks to be them.

I'd probably need several warm up pitches, but i could probably at least get it across the plate. A friend and I were talking a few years ago and he said I couldn't throw a football 30 yards. I was able to do it on the first try, but it wasn't pretty.

I guess I thought (from old newsreels) that when presidents like Harding or Wilson would "throw out" the first pitch, they just tossed it from a front-row stadium seat to the pitcher a few feet away, who then walked to the mound with it.

When did it become "throwing the first pitch" instead of "throwing out the first pitch?"

I would say it's better to under-throw it. Let it bounce in front of the catcher. It looks worse when the catcher has to jump like a wide receiver, miss and then have to run after it smiling smiley

Any way you throw the ball, at 60 ft, it's extremely difficult to cross the plate. When you're on the mound and you look at home plate, it's a SMALL area to hit. But thank you for the strangely unnecessary explanation of what a first pitch is.

Nah - a bounce on the plate telegraphs sadness. A wild pitch is funny, and it puts the focus on the catcher...

I make that distance throw pretty often in softball, so I could do it at least so the catcher wouldn't have to take more than a step. BUT I'm in my 50's, and I have to say no capability has suffered more with age, than my arm. In my 70's? I don't think so, unless my deterioration levels off a lot.

I'm not much for baseball, but I'm a huge fan of Bob Uecker's appearances on The Tonight Show (with Johnny) and The Late Show with David Letterman.

I think it was on Johnny's show that Uecker said "I had a lifetime hitting average of .200. That'd be a million dollar player today!"

And he's still calling it for the Brewers.

It's a thing of beauty. I loved to watch him pitch, pure pleasure. Guys are way too efficient with their windups today. Boooooooring.
