Need IDE to USB recommendation
Posted by: macphanatic

Found my internal Zip drive. Looking for an IDE to usb adapter (powered) that will work with Catalina. Any recommendations? Prefer something cheap that works as I just need to unload a bunch of zip disks and dispose of them.

“ Im not sure it exists.”

Sure it does.

I have this one (older model) from our sponsors:

My fault, missed the "internal" part -- figured he just said "IDE" but meant "parallel" =)

Parallel to USB -- those exist but 99% sure only for printers, not data.

Vantec SATA/IDE to USB Drive Adapter w/ power supply $20 @ MicroCenter.
I've held on to mine for years, "just in case".

Fakespot has been producing bizarre results lately. [forums.macresource.com]

Bought the NewerTech. Hopefully it will do what I need it to.

Hooked up a usb floppy drive to my son's MBA running the latest version of 10.15 and it will read only some of the floppies I have. Might have to pull out the 2008 MacBook to see if it will read the others.

I have both the OWC, and the powered Vantec models. Several years ago when we did our Zip project, I used those, a few PM G3/4/5 towers, external FW & USB Zips, and the Pismo w/ its 250MB Zip in the secondary bay. Was finally able to reclaim just about all the mass quantities of Zipped data, except for two that didn't survive. A few took attempts w/ multiple Zips before finding one that the Zip cart liked.

Don't get me started on the Syquests..., or the floppy projects! cool smiley
But good luck. As noted, having multiple reading resources was a savior.
