....soldered to the logic board.....

....so if logic board is replaced, you will lose data......so backup......

New 27-Inch iMac's Storage Affixed to Logic Board, 4TB and 8TB Configurations Have Expansion Connector

.....Following a report from German blog iFun.de that claimed the new 27-inch iMac's flash storage is soldered to the logic board, MacRumors has obtained additional information in an internal document for Apple technicians.

In the document, Apple says that the flash storage is indeed affixed to the logic board and cannot be removed. However, for the 4TB and 8TB configurations, Apple says that a flash storage expansion board is attached to a connector on the logic board. In the 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations, the expansion board and connector are not present.

Apple adds that the flash storage and logic board are paired together for hardware encryption, so data will be lost if the logic board is replaced. For this reason, it is recommended that customers back up their files on a regular basis.

The new 27-inch iMac features 10th-generation Intel Core processors, AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics, up to 128GB of RAM, up to 8TB of storage, a 1080p front-facing FaceTime camera, a True Tone display with a nano-texture glass option, higher fidelity speakers, studio-quality microphones, and more.

soldered.............?!

True of every T2 chipped Mac.

...Soldering the SSD to the board almost doesn't matter at that point. You can't swap it out with a 3rd party drive. You can't swap a T2 Mac's SSD without bringing your computer to Apple to pair the new drive with the logicboard and secure enclave, which they won't do because you made an unsupported upgrade.

How did we have encryption before T2 chips? Why is this necessary?

So will it still boot & run from an external SSD in a USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 case if the internal SSD fails?

We had FileVault.

Using it dramatically slowed the Mac, even with SSDs.

The T2 chip takes the burden of encryption off the CPU, speeding it up so much that the slowdown is undetectable.

It's a good security feature on a laptop.

You had to personally install drive/folder encryption. A lot of companies do this for internal security or if you work for some parts of the government.

Only if you enable it in preferences. The default setting is the machine will be bricked if the internal drive gets corrupted (loses power during an OS update, liquid spill, etc.) or fails for some reason.

You need to enable it from the Security options while booted to Recovery.

Thank you for the clarification. I don't have a Mac with T2.

FileVault2 does not cause any major speed tax, I ran some direct comparisons a few years ago. You should use it, even for a desktop.

FileVault2 does not cause any major speed tax...

Yes, it does.

I have a T1 Touch Bar MacBook Pro and while it's still speedy, enabling FileVault caused an easily-observed drop in speed and a big lag on wake-from-sleep.

The same thing just doesn't happen on a T2 chipped MBP.

I did not compare on a T1 Touch Bar MacBook Pro, so you may be right.

I DID compare on a non-T1 chip Macbook, and the speed drop was immeasurable.

I note this because FileVault1 absolutely had a speed hit.

Found a nice and recent article:
[macmyths.com]

The 2020 Macs show no performance hit with FileVault. Interesting.

Also, no major issue with the 2012 Mac Mini!

I moved our unused one to the garage in a hazardous waste area after a battery swelled on the shelf for a MacBook last year.
