Friend has 2009 iMac and lamp plugged into 6-hole extension strip. When Mac goes to sleep lamp goes off.

The strip probably has a "Master" outlet that powers off other devices when it detects power-down on the Master outlet.

Move the iMac's plug to another outlet.

We were thinking something along those lines. He was actually starting to like it since it cut out a step in his going-to-bed routine.

You would think so, but I have seen this kind of info printed very small, indicated by an ambiguous icon, molded into the plastic so that it was almost indistinguishable, and so on. A lot of designers of this kind of consumer equipment need to be hit with a clue-by-four and made to learn the basic elements of design for safety and human factors.
