Where to buy inexpensive 700c wheel set these days?

This is for my '81 Raleigh Super Grand Prix. Originally had alloy wheels. I will check a few local shops that deal in used.

Clinchers or tubulars? winking smiley I used to build custom wheels about 35 years but sold all my equipment.

Edit: Looks like one issue is going to be the rear spacing. All these new wheels are setup for 9, 10 and 11 speed freewheels.

Uh, tube? I never had to replace a tube on this bike. Original now worn out tires rotted. My rims were snapped like tacos while it was in storage. Will need everything but the rear gear cassette I suppose.

Last year made in England.

I had a Super Gran Prix that I bought in '79. Just messing with you on the type, you definitely want clinchers with a tube.

I ran tubulars on a 21 lb. Peugeot PSV-10. I built a set of ultralight wheels using Weinmann ultralight tubular rims, you glued the tires on, and double butted carbon spokes. Back then I weighed 135# and those rims were only rated for a rider up to about 150#.

700c and not 27”?

(I haven't forgotten those extension levers, just been really busy!)

I recently pro-formed a Park truing stand, and plan to start building some wheels for the older bikes that I work on.

And I haven't snapped a pic yet either. I'll double check metric or english.

There is an '81 Super Grand Prix for sale here locally, but the shifter is on the diagonal tub, not the handlebar ends. That is an odd place for that vintage Raleigh SGP.

“ the shifter is on the diagonal tub”

(Down tube)

Not too hard to deal with.

Yeah that’s about as long ago as I built my last wheelset.

A '78 Super Gran Prix had 700c's on them. Now that I think about and from googling pics I'm fairly sure mine was just a Gran Prix and not the Super, steel rims and 27".

Yeah, mine is alloy wheels, shifter on tube ends. the 2 identifying factors of a Super Grand Prix.

Just verified, 700x28 tires on it, and definitely alloy rims. btfc, if you PM me your cell phone number, I can text the pics, and you can have your phone as reference while digging through your parts.

And the top tube actually has a silk screen decal that says Super Grand Prix, so there is that...... It is that pearl green, not the blue. They only offered those 2 colors on the SGP in '81.

My frame is a 23 1/2, which is a 60cm I guess. and at 5'11", it should be just about right. Must have been about my full size as a freshman.

I'm pretty sure I can snag a Raleigh Technium with great alloy wheels in my neighborhood for $50. Same vintage bike. Should be the same or similar wheels. Same size for sure. I'll look at it tomorrow.

Two different ways you can go on this - cheap, just get whatever, or modern. You'd pay a bit more but the ride quality will be noticeably improved. I'd aim for take offs from a brand new bike where someone upgraded their wheels. I'm not sure how much you ride but if you put one some miles get the nicer wheels.

Dude, this is so strange: just today I dug out my Raleigh Grand Prix with the steel wheels. I need some help with those, as they rusted in storage. And yes, it's blue.

So get back to work and sweat some more
The sun will sink, and we'll get out the door
It's no good for man to work in cages
Hits the town, he drinks his wages
You're frettin', you're sweatin'
But did you notice you ain't gettin'?

That's pretty funny. The Super Grand Prix came with alloy wheels and handle bar end shifters.

I just scored that Raleigh Technium locally. Decent alloy wheels, but needs new tires. Nice touring Bell leather seat though. I'll keep that too. So, 2 new tires, new brake pads, and I'll see about the tubes.

I do need to figure out how to swap the gears from the old damaged wheel to the new one.
