OT: someone owes you $7, but doesn't remember... what do you do?
Posted by: space-time
Date: February 20, 2007 07:38AM
So a bunch of us go to a farewell lunch about 2-3 weeks ago because a colleagues was leaving the company. Another guy organized the lunch and put on his CC. back at the office, did the math, came to $13 each. I gave him a $20 bill and he said he doesn't have change (I believed him since he had to give change to everyone). I said OK, you give me change next week.

So 2-3 weeks later and I still haven't got the change back. Now I don't care about these money, it's a cheap lesson that I learned. I decided to forget about it, however next time I make sure that I pay exactly what I owe and not a dollar more.

What would you have done instead? remember, this is a co-worked, not a friend.

Ask to borrow $7, then if that jogs his memory pretend like you didn't remember the fact that he still owed you that money in the first place. Don't pay him back.

How could you ever forget these immortal words:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

What could you have done instead of giving him the $20? Well, you could have written him a check for the exact amount. Or, you could have been better prepared in the first place and had enough cash in small bills to cover your lunch. Or, when you found out he didn't have change, you could have told him that you'd pay him "on Monday", because that $20 bill is all you have.

I have had things like this happen in the past, and the guy probably did forget, so I'd just do as tronnei suggests.

Well, it started at DM, but same "ForGetFul" folk migrated over.

Oh, in pertaining to your problem SpaceTime, most folk are egocentric, it isn't that they are actively forgetting, you just don't rate that high on his meter.
If you were a boss, or a SuperHottie, they would have remembered.
Get some spine, just say, "Where is my change?"

Leading on from this example, at what point do you say it's not worth the effort? $5? $10? $20?

Just ask for your money. If it makes you feel less awkward, make up a story such as, "I have to stop and get some milk on the way home, do you have that $7 so I don't need to hit the ATM?" Or something else along those lines.

Gently remind him of it. You have to assume that he may have just forgotten (rather than assuming he has intentionally chosen not to return it). If after reminding him a few times, he hasn't given it to you, eat the loss-- but then next time it happens, make sure only to pay the actual amount as someone else said. Or, next time around, remind him that he owes the $7 and deduct that from whatever you pay. It kind of depends on how friendly you are with him-- you said he's not a friend, but there are different levels of friendiness-- with some co-workers, it's no big deal and it's a sort of "I owe you seven, don't worry, I'll take care of you later", whereas for others, you know you'll never see your seven again. grinning smiley

OK, how about a stickball bat?

I also find that a finger flick on the forehead gets attention with much less violence then my aforementioned techniques.

My S/O used to work with a jerk who always 'forgot' to give people, esp his female co-workers, back their changes. That was how his extra income came about!

Call in the goon squad. A couple of Louisville Sluggers should bring back his memory. OK just kidding...

If I loan out money (which I rarely do) I give it with the expectation that I'm not getting it back. Co-worker, friend. Doesn't matter. Which is why I don't loan out $. I'm neither a bank nor charity. I've also found that people who borrow money from friends or co-workers usually do it with the expectation they are not going to pay it back. Responsible people don't borrow money from friends or co-workers.

we're not talking about BORROWING or LOANING money here. it's just change.

penguin, regarding your questions, IMHO around $7-10 is the threshold. if it were $20 I would definitely remind him.

As I thought. It's just in that should I/shouldn't I zone. Much less or much more and you know exactly what to do but $7 ..... hmmm...difficult.

You know I have the opposite problem. Last time I borrowed $5 from a co-worker, I tried to pay him back TWICE. He looked at me like I was testing him. But, in the end he proved too honest to take me up on it.

Why is this thread so long?

Either politely ask for the money or forget about it.
Those are your only two choices.

If it were me, I'd probably make a joke out of it when I reminded him. "Hey, get me that $7 by Thursday or I'll call in the Sopranos." This lets him know that you havent forgotten but are not being a jerk about it, either.

Of course this whole forum (and most of the Internets) is a waste of time. ;-0

Find a penny stock that has done an outstanding job in the past couple of weeks and let him know that had you been able to invest that money you would have a lot more. Then make your kids put dirt all over their faces and hold up soup bowls like they are very hungry. If you don't have kids then borrow some.

Why did you fall into the trap of letting someone split a bill evenly between so many people? You should always just pay for your own. Unless of course you got the "Surf and Turf" then I guess you got a deal. Or did I understand your post wrong?

"Say, do you have my $7 change from that lunch?"

It may be a matter of principle to some, but my threshold in that situation is $1- if it doesn't fold, I'm not worried.

But I'm also no worried whether or not someone else think's I'm a cheapskate. They can think what they want, but I'll have my money.

And there's a difference between those who don't have change, and those who never seem to have change. The latter tend to short change people at other opportunities, and in other areas. They get *no* slack.

I feel the same way about loaning out money ... I only loan money or things if I could afford to lose it. On the other hand, I only borrow if I could pay back. Most often in a small amount, i.e. less than $10 with co-workers; $2,000 is max from close friends. Even then, it's a rarity.

I would want to be reminded. The friendship credit system breaks down when memory lapses set in. I would do it soon though... he may not be able to pay the interest you placed on it by the end of next month.... :0

while everyone else is at lunch, send him a few emails from other people's computers blaming different third parties inquiring about the repayment...

from threeprong;
"voodoo was wondering if you ever paid space back the $7 change you owed him from buster's lunch a couple of weeks ago?"

from Seacrest;
"Sally, the hottie in accounting, wanted to go out with you until she found out from BGnR that you stiffed space at buster's lunch."

from kap;
"I overheard pinion talking to raz at the water cooler this morning talking about creative ways to get you to pay space the dough you owe him from buster's lunch, and I gotta tell ya, a couple of ways were VERY creative..."

shortly after he gets back from lunch, he'll suddenly remember his debt to you, come up to you and repay you, whereupon you give him a puzzled look, softly thank him, then exclaim that, wow, you had completely forgotten about getting your change back from buster's lunch...

don't ya just love happy endings?

Sometimes it is what it is...
