Bohemian Rhapsody was somewhat of a hit when it came out. Wayne's World definitely helped put it back in the spotlight. The recent movie also helped. Some music magazine recently named it as the greatest Rock and Roll song of all time. I like it, but it probably wouldn't crack my Top 100. It's not even my favorite song by the band.

And not song, but a band that grew in stature a while back would be AC-DC. My older brother used to have a book that rated albums... might have been by Rolling Stone. Anyway, at the time this book was published, AC-DC had just released "Back in Black". The book rated albums from 1 to 5 stars. They also had a rating of a "bullet", which essentially meant it was so bad, it wouldn't even get one star. Every single AC-DC album was rated with a bullet. A few years later, I got an updated copy of the book. Now, the albums rated like 3 or 4 stars.

I have to say Crazy Train has been my theme song this year.

I've grown partial to the cover done by Liliac...a family group of kids from 12 to 22.

Stravinsky’s “Le Sacre du printemps“ seems to be much better received lately than when it first was performed.

Several old songs that were featured in movies and -re-introduced to new audiences have done rather well. “Dueling Banjos” from “Delivernace” and “The Entertainer” from “The Sting” come to mind. Whitney Houston’s “Always” from “The Bodyguard” took the world by storm.

I’m appreciating Frank Sinatra a lot more than I used to.

John Lennon made the case that Yoko Ono’s singing was ahead of its time. Not sure if that has actually come to pass.

Classics sometimes take time to become classics. Back in Black is definitely a classic.

I took it to refer to songs that have increased significantly in popularity or importance with the passage of time. Sorry, but most of the songs listed here so far do not fall into this category, with three exceptions:

• "Jolene": Relatively unknown when it came out, it has steadily increased in popularity with general audiences since Miley Cirus released her cover.
• "Hallelujah": Again, Cohen's version was relatively unknown among non-Cohen fans. This song really took off for two reasons: 1) it's use in the movie Shrek, and 2) the popularity of Jeff Buckley's cover.
• "Bohemian Rhapsody": For reasons stated earlier in the thread.

One could probably add Parton's "I Will Always Love You" to the list -- Whitney Houston's cover took it to new heights of popularity.

Dolly Parton in general has grown in stature, "Jolene" is part of that for sure.

Pretty obscure within 5 years of release, but started coming back

"Hallelujah" is there as well.


10 years ago I described "Stand By Me" as a towering mountain of a song. But it started as a huge hit and became a golden oldie. I like John Lennon's cover. And it has continued to grow.

I think a song is great if it can survive being abused on those Karaoke TV shows and "Glee" and the like.

Definitely agree that Miley has kicked it up quite a bit but would also argue that the White Stripes cover in 2000 also ushered in a whole new audience to the song.

I was playing music in Nashville through the 90's and "Jolene" was getting more and more popular with bands and singer/songwriter types. They were always on the lookout for good overlooked songs for albums and live shows. It was dawning on them just how powerful the lyrics were. This realization that was spreading was why Mollie Cyrus and Jack White did the song. Sure, they kicked it up several notches, but they did it because of the groundswell with regular musicians.

That’s true — I forgot all about that version. It definitely contributed to the song’s increase in stature.
