Have you noticed? Toilet paper is getting smaller and smaller...

I bought a big load of TP during the early days of the pandemic - a big box of Quilted Northern from Georgia Pacific. I had a big package of Charmin big rolls before that. The Quilted Northern seemed small, but I just assumed it was the fatness of the roll that threw me off, but I looked on the packages...

The new stuff is 3.8" x 4". The old stuff was 3.9" x 4".

In the back of the bottom drawer in the bathroom is a really old mostly used roll of garbage TP. Must have been some emergency situation and I left it there for the next emergency. It's probably 7 years old (maybe 2x that).

I ripped off a sheet and measured it. It's 4.25" x 4".

How long until it disappears altogether?

....it it getting shorter, width wise......all those consumers companies do the same, they shrink the container/size but keep the price the same so that consumers can't tell.......remember half gallon ice cream containers.....they are all 1.5 qt now......juice container are smaller.....dish washing liquid containers are smaller......etc......

Charmin from Costco is the only one I have found to be the standard size before the shrinkage

Remember 7oz tuna cans. It seems like only Costco has them these days.

It's probably a little wider than it needs to be.

1. Shrink the size slowly while keeping the price similar and the consumer probably won't notice.
2. Introduce the new Jumbo size (same as the original from 2 decades ago) at a higher price.

4. Profit!

The rolls have become so narrow that now I have nearly two inches of unused space on my bathroom dispenser.

It might be my imagination but it seems like post-pandemic TP suddenly got more narrow.

The shrinking culprit is the candy bar industry, they pioneered the concept and everyone else just followed.

perhaps a less conspiratorial theory...
Narrower rolls are the standard in the 'commercial/janitorial' market.
The holders & dispensers used in offices, factories, etc. were standardized decades
ago for the narrow rolls. So what to do when the commercial demand evaporates?
Repackage the item for retail sale! Food processors started doing this back in
April or May when restaurants, etc. shut down. Bulk sizes repacked into smaller
goods for the home use; e.g. beef patties, hold the Ten Pound boxes, make them
One or Two pounds.

Standard 3.33" holder...

But yet they offset the width shrinkage by packaging more onto a roll, to the point that most normal toilet paper dispensers can barely fit them. You now need two hands to move a new roll around as it gets stuck against the side of the dispenser.

Yup. My old job was with a market research firm. One of our clients was Scott, back when it was still an actual company. They did a lot of studies in the 70s and 80s to determine whether slight reductions in sheet size and sheet count would affect sales compared to a price increase.

Another trick now is to use a bigger cardboard tube. So more waste to try to fool customers about the size of the roll. I was buying a decent-quality tubeless Scott brand (not the awful single ply) until this spring, when it was apparently discontinued.

...and... rolling the paper on the tube more loosely; roll depth appears the same, but actually less paper on tube. That's how Charmin can describe the result as "squeezable", more air between the layers. RollingEyesSmiley5

I just looked at my most recent bale of Kirkland TP and the package says 4.5" x 4" sheets. No shrinkage, at least on the label, I didn't measure.
