I got a Boston Acoustics Recepter radio...dual alarm, digital tuning, sweet looking tabletop radio, at the Goodwill for $15. Problem is, everything seems to be functional except for the sound output.

For you electronics tinkerers out there, what would be the first thing you would do? Pop it open and look for the speaker connections? Look for exploded capacitors? Put it on eBay?
Put the kettle on?

Could be almost anywhere.

Well not anywhere, but anywhere in the amplification circuit. Crack it open and first check the speaker(s) for any damage or loose connections. Put a volt meter on the speaker outputs and see if you can measure anything when it is supposed to be playing.

If it isn't something physical like the speaker itself or connections, then the trouble probably lies within the amplification circuit. You can look around in there for any obvious signs of damaged or broken components. After that you are really going to need to start poking around with a multi meter to get any more useful info. I am guessing that is not an area you are looking to get into.

Pop it open. If you see something obvious, try replacing it. If you don't, your stuck w/o a schematic.

If everything else works OK -- it tunes stations, the display shows stuff, lamps and/or LEDs light up, etc -- and there's no sound, then it might be an internal fuse it there are any. If it doesn't work at all, then it still might be an internal fuse or the power tranformer might have an open winding, or any of several tens of other things....

Seriously, I don't have delusions about what I can do, but I do have a soldering iron, multimeter, and the interwebs. Who knows what will happen next?

Plug in headphones.

That should bypass most amplification circuitry.

unfortunately there is no headphone jack, just an aux jack.

And headphones generally run off od a low-voltage sample of the speaker outputs, so that wouldn't help.....

Is there *any* kind of noise from the speaker?

If there is any hiss, then the AUX jack could be jacked up.

Otherwise it's something in the amp circuit or the speaker. Yes, check it's connections.

Drop a line to BA about this and see if they'd consider refurbishing it.
