Obviously, said student is NOT "college material". I'd have the house locks changed BEFORE "the genius" got back home. old fogey smiley

My bet is that a letter from the family's lawyer will result in the tuition coming back. Or maybe they'll offer a semester back without cost. Something like that. I'd bet the college didn't follow the whole process to kick a student out that's detailed in the student discipline guidelines. At our college it takes a while to kick a student out for non-felonious behavior.

Normally I would agree with you. But as wacky as things are getting, who knows?
I'd be curious to know how much of the $36K is in loans!

Many schools are having the students sign agreements on the policies in effect during attendance while the pandemic is here. Their lawyers will point to violations of that as being the reason, the family's lawyer will have limited grounds to file suit.

Who pays a full year all at once? Is that the way it's done these days?

Sadly, $36k may not be the full year.

That is for the fall term only, and yes, you pay it in advance.

Every year you read news articles about college students going missing. I think those 11 are candidates. The only question would be did they go missing before or after returning home.

This was how much a year at USC cost when I started college.... nearly 40 years ago. smiley-shocked003

The number 11 would be from Northeastern. That is in Boston, they are not going to play around on COVID-19 social distancing compliance. The metropolitan Boston area was 2nd or 3rd behind NYC for cases and deaths in the Spring.

When it comes to attending parties in light of the COVID Crisis, I have no sympathy or tolerance for those people.

While I hope none of these idiots contracts or succumbs to COVID, I do hope they don't get their money back.

I though I heard on the news yesterday there were prosecutions of some violators (not related to this incident).

I'll have to pay more attention.

I paid $400 a semester in 1949 $100 month at sorority house rm and board. We could also sell our books back. About 10,000 enrollment.

Nothing prevents a civil suit.

And the lawyer(s) for the plaintiff(s) would name not only the university but also the individuals responsible for the decision as defendants.

Rather than go to trial there would be some confidential settlement.

College/University Administrations decided to "allow" students back on campus, knowing full well that this age group would push boundaries when not under their parents or direct adult supervision. They did it for one reason - money.

This doesn't absolve students of responsibility for their actions. It does, however, show a failure of good judgement on both parts. Both parties are to blame and should be held accountable for their decisions.

Unfortunately, the brain eating bacteria epidemic of 2020 is going to far surpass the issues of Covid.

I would certainly expect the parents to play the 'You know how stupid our kids are and you never should have let them back on campus. We're just the parents and have no control or influence over our kids. That's your job. We're suing' card.
