Eye operation
Posted by: Dennis R
Date: September 17, 2020 10:58AM
I am in my car in the parking lot of my eye surgeon waiting for my turn to go have my eye operated on. It is for a victrectomy. I have to stay face down for 22 hours a day for a week for it to heal. I will be honest, I am quite scared. Please keep me in your thought and prayers and send good vibes my way. Thank you!

My mother in law had some sort of eye operation done where she had to keep her head down for a long time like that.
She was very good about it and it was a big success.
I can’t remember exactly what hers was for.

Good luck with yours!!!

Best wishes and good luck!

Things look good for you Dennis- all the best!

How long does it take to heal from a vitrectomy?
You will need 2 to 4 weeks to recover before you can do your normal activities again. It may take longer for your vision to get back to normal. This care sheet gives you a general idea about how long it will take for you to recover. But each person recovers at a different pace.

How successful is a vitrectomy?
The success rate for vitrectomy is around 90 percent, even if you're over 60.

I’ve had two detached retina operations, the procedure sounds worse that it actually is. Hang in there, take deep breaths and remain calm, you’ll be fine!

Anything on the eye sounds scary. I had a boss once who had to get these injections into his eyes on a regular basis. That sounded crazy.

Good vides.

And I was very scared when I got my eyes lasered. This sounds scary as well.

Right on, sounds like a great time to get into a new podcast series. I have nothing to recommend however, since I don't really have the time to dedicate to such pursuits.

I had a macular hole repair last year, involving a vitrectomy. Recovery was unremarkable. Prepare for cataract surgery in about a year. It's all good, I think the surgeon saved my sight in that eye. Good luck in your recovery.

FWIW, during my recovery from retina surgery I binged on comedy videos on Netflix, it made the long days of restricted movement a bit more bearable.

So glad to hear that your surgery went well, Dennis — and thanks very much to Patty for the update. Wow, 22 hours a day sounds like a lot, but it will be over before you know it.

If you need something to help pass the time, the Australian series Upright that I mentioned a few weeks ago is great (as long as no one with tender ears is around - it's very sweary). You both need a break, so maybe y'all would enjoy something really funny but satisfying and ultimately heartbreaking. Check it out here and escape to a different world for a while, if you are able to set up a screen on the floor or something like that:
[www.sundancenow.com] (and signing up for a free week of Sundance Now gives plenty of time to watch the whole series more than once)

Hopefully the worst is over, so enjoy, recover, and look forward to fresh eyes!

Many thanks for providing the news!

Please do not take advantage of his restricted positioning to:

remove his shirt, write amusing missives on his back and post them here

dress him in a tutu and post as above

dress him up as various animals, especially those with a tail

draw cartoon speech or though bubbles with self-deprecating remarks

have him watch movie marathons with you of your favorites that he manages to avoid

-or anything else that might make light of him and provide us with hours of amusement.

No, we wouldn't want to see anything like that.
