fortunately no files seem to have been seriously injured.
shocked and amazed.
lucky it seems only to have been corrupted and not fused discs.

all the ProTools sessions came back.
all the TV/film/music seem good.

I have ordered a new drive and gone with backblaze as per mattkime rec.

Had a crash back in my working days at work. I had backed up to my ZIP drives but not as recently has I should have. I had to work off those ZIP backups until a local data rescue operation restored the drive. It was a tense week while that drive was gone with the boss asking for data that was not yet available.

One problem with the restoration was that all of the file dates were changed to the date of restoration, and I used those dates to determine the most recent variation of a file. One thing I learned was to include the date in the filename when I had a file with frequent additions or changes.

How was the filesystem formatted on those drives? Was it HFS Extended Journaled? In my experience the Journaled filesystem pretty much eliminated all filesystem corruption.

the session work is all dated in the file name. No one would ever be able to keep track otherwise. there are some times 4 remixes in a day.
the rest, don't mater when.

they were HFS+. neither had been re-done since init, probably 7 years ago. since I had success recovering, I'd say 99%, HFS+ again.
I've only done APFS on the MBA itself. All ext are HFS+.

HFS+ can be used either with or without journaling, you should make sure that journaling is enabled. The journaling option first appeared sometime around 10.2 and 10.3.
