Did my shower commit suicide?

I turned the water off to my shower. First time since buying the property about a year ago. I turned it back on - I got some dirty (black) water and then nothing.

I suspect that a valve washer committed suicide. If I'm lucky, the bits are in the shower head, stopping up the whole thing. If I'm unlucky I'm calling a plumber.

I'm kind of tempted to replace the valve assembly myself. tell me why I'm dumb. Oh, I guess I should look at the shower head.

Possibly your anti water hammer pipes are next to your shower and when you drained water, corrosion drained out of those pipes. Clean your shower head and run a bit of water without the head in place.

If the old value assembly is threaded then it's not so bad of a job, but (like I had to do) putting in a new value where the old one was soldered in takes more effort as you'll likely need to solder in at least 3 threaded connections. Not sure if Sharkbite connectors will help either as the copper pipe helps to keep things in place, especially for the overhead nozzle in a shower and the spigot in a tub.

All in all, not terrible assuming you have decent access to the pertinent area. And if not, then here's a chance to build out an access panel!

could be a mix valve fail depending on the maker.
Take off the escutcheon, and a couple screws in the mix valve.
Usually I've been able to clean once and then replace a couple years later.

Shower body assy isn't bad if you have an access panel and are safe with a torch and flame protection.

Usually the biggest problem is the wall and tile between you and the plumbing.

I would remove the shower head and see if water runs with it off.

Replacing a shower valve body is not hard, but you have to work in small spaces. Are your pipes copper? Black pipe? Pex? Do you know how to solder? Converting to pex might be easiest.

Is the shower valve a single handle? Separate hot/cold? That will make a difference for wall repair issues. They make a large escutcheon plate for covering an old 3 hole set up and using a single handle (pressre/temp balanced) valve.

What's on the other side of the wall? You could cut out an access hold in the backing room/closet to do the install - much easier than working in the tiled wall.
