Safari 14 Woes Continue

I still continue to have more and more issues with Safari 14 under Mojave. While I was thrilled with the speed at first, the inability to get stuff done online with Safari is maddening. The sites that continuously reload until they fail include all bank sites, Geico, AutoTrader, several auto dealer sites (not that i need those any more), MacRumors, a couple of weather sites that I follow, and other miscellany.

What I have tried:

• Disable extensions (only Ghostery), cleared the cache, removed cookies and other stored data
• Switched to a guest user
• Made a bug report on Safari at Apple
• Verified that all of those same sites work fine in Chrome

I don't like Chrome. There's not a specific reason for that. It's just like wearing someone else underwear (not that I make that a habit).

Specific questions (so you know I am not just whining):

• Has anyone figured out a solution?
• Does Safari work better under Catalina?
• Should I update to Catalina?

TIA

I'm not using it, but my bank warned me that if I updated to Safari 14 that their site would not work. They recommended staying with what I have or switching browsers- ie. Chrome.

I'm not making the move. I'm on Mojave (resisting Catalina).

I have not played with Safari 14 on my main Mojave machine.

But I just checked, and I was readily able to go to WellFargo online using Safari 14 and this Catalina machine.

Maybe there's some security setting at issue - check those in Mojave system preferences?

Yeah I'm a little surprised to hear this myself, because I've basically had ZERO issues with it myself... the only thing I've noticed so far is some YouTube videos failing to load, but that might also be due to the ad-blocker plug-ins I'm using... YouTube apparently wanting to blast some ads at me before playing some videos.

I wonder if something went wrong with your install?

If someone gives me a specific list of websites to try (that presumably don't require a login or registration), I can test on my end if they work.

It's the same version under Catalina, so probably not.

I'd hold off on upgrading. You shouldn't install a new OS when you're having problems under the old one. You'll end up with a mashup of the bugs from the new OS on top of the problems you had under the old OS. It'll drive you nuts.

...I'm not having any trouble with the new Safari yet, excepting some websites that won't load because of security issues.

You might see what happens if you quit Safari, remove the entire ~/Library/Safari folder (can always put it back later) and then relaunch Safari.

Interesting. What's so special about Safari 14 and Credit Unions or banking security?

Most likely, they use an invalid security certificate. It's often surprising just how insecure banking websites are.

Its definitely a Safari 14 and Mojave combo issue. There a more than a few threads on the Apple user forums about it. I've done about all I can do to resolve it short of reinstalling Mojave to get Safari 13 back. I can live with using Chrome for while a wait and see if Apple offers a solution, if not I'll reinstall.

Mark and Golfer,

I'm running Safari 14 on three difference machines with Mojave. Two 2019 iMacs and one 2015 Macbook Pro 13". No issues at all with any web sites including several different banks (Bank of America, TD Bank, Chase Bank, Wells Fargo and others.

1. I have exact same problems
2. You can fix it sometimes by turning off JavaScript, but that cripples usability.
3. I am going to reinstall Mojave.

Running version 14 on a Catalina MacBook pro and smooth as glass with all financial institutions. Contrast that with my old MacPro current hardware limited to El Capitan and Safari 11.1.2 that became almost unusable some months ago when suddenly all sorts of security certificate issue suddenly started blocking access to most financial institutions. Finally in desperation I gave up and changed default to Opera browser (FireFox works equally well) and have never looked back. Lately I confess the more Apple exerts their control over our computers and use of same I continue flashing back to the heydays of MicroSoft when they were so arrogant and got the appropriate nickname of the darkside. Seems to me Apple is heading down the same path IMHO.

I reinstalled Mojave on both my laptop and my desktop. All better!

• Has anyone figured out a solution?

Yes. The solution is probably to uninstall Ghostery.

I don't have any problems at all with the sites you mentioned.

MMM nope. I disabled the extensions earlier to no avail. Just completely uninstalled all traces, cleared the cache, deleted cookies. We're still a no go for Safari and Bank Of America et al.

Followup: An hour later, I located the Mojave installer and reinstalled Mojave. Great Success!
