Why oh why, Apple, have you made it so difficult?

Back in the good old days, with iTunes, if I wanted to add an audiobook to my phone, it was just drag and drop- for the life of me, I can't figure out a way to do this in the latest Catalina, even having brought back iTunes with Retroactive. sad smiley

If anyone has any words of wisdom, I'm open to suggestions.

1. There's an Audiobooks tab in the Finder sync options for the iPhone. Do you see it?

2. Are you sure that you haven't got the audiobooks on your iPhone? They turn up in the Books app now if they're of the "Audiobook" genre.

No - the books are not on my iPhone - if all my books went over automatically from Books, I'd be out of memory.

I may have found the secret - When you are in the finder tab, there is a button for manage storage - click on it and it allows you to delete books - I thought - maybe you can add here as well - it appears to have copied - not yet appearing on my phone, perhaps there is an added step needed.

I've never done a sync with media - choosing in old iTunes to manage manually. I don't want to sync now even with manual selection, since I have tons of books on there now - and I get a pop up that says:
Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, and books from this iPhone and sync with this library? Music, movies, TV shows, and books synced to “Ellen Crockett’s iPhone” from other libraries will be removed and items will be synced from this library.

That occurs if you've never synced with that computer before, or under that user account.

Are we missing some back-story?

Wait until you try to buy a song from the iTunes Store.

It is what it is.

I've backed up with this computer - but I've never "synced" music, books, etc with any computer - I've always manged those pieces manually
