The joys of home ownership....exterior paint edition

Was doing some exterior touch ups and discovered that the paint is glossy (ish?) not the matte I requested. I could tell something wasn't right but I lacked experience to be confident in what I saw.

What does it say on the can? What is the brand and the sheen?
Not all brands sheen names mean the same thing.
Does it say satin, flat, semi-gloss, or what.
Sherwin Williams has some oddball sheen names that don’t correlate well if you are matching the color in another brand.

Was this a custom color match or did you buy a specific named color?

Behr Marquee
flat, matte

That Marquee flat/matte isn't super flat, but it is the flattest in the Marquee line.
Your original paint may have been a true flat that has weathered to have virtually no sheen, so the Marquee will appear ever so slightly shinier.
The Behr Premium Plus has a flat finish which will have less of a sheen than a matte.
It is pretty hard to sheen match a weathered exterior paint, but a true flat would match better than a matte.
You could even go with the Behr Pro exterior flat, which is the flattest of the Behr exterior line, but it is a lesser quality paint.
Even though it was a custom color match, you can return it, even though it may say non-returnable on the sticker. grinning smiley

More info than you probably wanted.

I hope I read it correctly that the touch up is shinier than the original you are touching up.

Not at all!

I have some behr ultra matte and I don't have the same complaint. I was attempting to match the same color worn to different degrees on different sides of the house.

I'll try to take a pic tomorrow.

Also - you worked in the paint dept?

Just be glad you didn’t go with a “specialty” paint store. The guy we hired before we moved bought the paint from Dunn Edwards, we specified Sherman Williams. Anyways we didn’t know the sheen, they have a ridiculous amounts of sheen and they all look different, from paint sheen to their sample sheen.

Yep. Full time in the Paint Dept, after I moved from part time in garden.

All the Behr lines have slightly different sheen levels. It can be very tough to get the sheen just right, especially for exterior paint which can weather differently from one side of the house to another, as you have found out.
If the area you are touching up is flatter than the Ultra, drop down to the Premium Plus Flat. You might want to get one of the little sample sizes to double check the sheen before getting a gallon.

Was the paint mixed/stirred well prior to application? This could impact the sheen.

Is the new paint the same brand/type as the old or just color matched? If the later, it's going to look different regardless.

Have you repainted any of those?
Each one looks like a slightly different color. The one in the middle looks like a higher sheen than the rest.

The one in the middle is the one i repainted and I'm wondering if its the wrong sheen.

This is a small spot I touched up where the sheen and color matches very well. To be clear, no sheen problems here. Trying to establish if the photo in the post above is a mistaken paint mix. - [imgur.com]

The middle one definitely looks too glossy, as compared to the others, but you should compare it to what you took in for them to match to. I am assuming you took a piece of the paint to match.
Also, that sheen doesn’t look like the flat/matte of the Marquee to me. It looks more like a satin finish.
If you apply the paint in a really heavy coat, it can sometimes look a little shinier, You might mix the paint really well and put another thin coat over that one and see how it looks when dry, before taking it back.
