I'm about to sell an iMac...

iMac 21.5" Intel Core i5 Quad-Core 2.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB 5400rpm HDD, lightly used, pristine...

...to a good friend of mine.

I've been tech support for him since he got is first Mac after his LC. so no worries.

Trying to figure out a price, ebay shows variants of the above from $300-$500.

I'm thinking $250-$300, but I don't really know the market value.

He's wanted this iMac for awhile, but did ask me about a current 21-27" iMac, so I'll have to clarify what he wants and why.

So, do we have an idea what this should go for?

Flippers- what would you expect/accept if you had it to put on ebay?

Its got USB 3.

He will want to factor in the cost of an external USB SSD to the overall cost of the iMac. Dunno if you want to give him a break because of that.

$50ish for 500 GB, if thats enough. Assuming he isnt storing a ton of stuff, or can use the 1 TB drive as extra storage.

No idea on his comptuer savvy.

He's got my 2007 24" iMac with 4G and a 320G HD, which, after 6 or so years, has 1.5 G free space.

So, not a heavy duty user.

I've got a SATA SSD or two to use as a boot drive.

I asked his main reason for wanting to upgrade, and it's because he has to use Firefox more and more, as Safari stumbles more and more on newer websites.

I wouldn't say his computer gun-handling approaches 'savvy', but he's as competent as anybody who's had to right a ton of reports on one.

And he listens, so I can talk him back down to the carrier deck on the rare occasion I've had to.

It maxes out at El Cap, but I don't remember what it's at now, maybe Mavs.

The 2013 iMac tops out at Catalina, unless maybe one gets geeky with it, but we wouldn't.

He may want to get a brandy new Mac anyway, and that's ok by me.

I'm not needing to off this, but if he wanted it, it would be a convenient sale.

Or I could sell him my Late 2015 27" 5K Retina and get a new one for me. LOL

1.5G of free space is a big, big problem. So is the 4G of RAM but far more so the 1.5G. A 512 GB SSD will make his machine hum (relatively).

Tell me something I don't know.

But that's not the problem.

As I posted earlier, the problem is old Safari not working with a lot of sites in an old OS, blah blah blah.

I'm at Sierra on one Mac, and its Safari still has trouble with some sites, and the 2007 maxes out wit El Cap.

So speeding up his 2007 won't cure what ails him.

I'd also jump at $250 or $300 for 2015 iMac like that.
Put the SSD in for him if you have spares.

BIL/SIL have an ancient C2D 24" iMac as well. Suffered similar performance anxiety. Optioned up to 6GB RAM, added internal 500GB (OWC) SSD. And USB HD webcam (iMac's iSight cam sucks by today's standards). Mostly happily humming w/ FF. TM and CCC backup, cuz it's old. Biggest reason to upgrade is to get enough oomph to use virtual backgrounds in Zoom. And get newer better all around A/V performance. But all in all, it's plenty usable.

With USB 3 the new owner can easily run from an external SSD and also add an external HDD for more storage.
