Giving firefox a try.

I guess its possible that there's a plugin or other config problem with chrome but if i'm going to need to reset to defaults I might as well try a new browser.

Yes. No.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Did that a while ago Chrome<>FF and it worked - at first. Now FF sits there and eats RAM on a level with Chrome. If I don't allow it to run continuously, it's OK. Means quitting and reopening every few days but on the other hand I'm a tab junky (ought to get a sponsor and keep a TA tab open 24/7), I once stopped and counted over 50 tabs alive and devouring RAM.

Ditto the above. I am also a tab junkie. FF will slow down after a while unless you quit. I think plug-ins (ad blockers ,etc) can also be issues unto themselves, slowing down the browser. Still, FF with Duck Duck Go as your search default is night and day better on privacy than Chrome. FF is my default browser. I use Safari at times also. But I only use Chrome when I have something bookmarked there that isn't in FF or Safari.

You can never be too rich, too intelligent, or have too much RAM.

Having tried them all over the years I find Opera to be the best of the pack. I prefer Safari on my machines that can be updated and run the latest OS, however for my trusty old MacPro (early 2008 version) Safari is useless due unsupported status, Chrome started out good but gradually went downhill and sucked up resources and similar results with Firefox. Mind you this unit has 16 GB of memory but even that can be sucked down to reduced performance with enough tabs open in the other browsers while Opera just seems to somehow manage it without a care in the world. Opera also has some very nice and effective built in privacy features that block ads and tracking with no additional third party extensions.

Firefox is my primary for the last few years.
Safari if I can't get thru for some reason.
Opera and Brave when neither gets thru, seldom .... and I'm not very familiar with them.
Chrome I gave up on a long time ago.
Kept gorging itself.

I use Firefox without any speed or memory issues, but I don’t have hundreds of open tabs. I also don’t bother with sites that are chock full of ads. I use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine within Firefox and use the DDG browser a lot on my iDevices, as well as Firefox.

I ditched Chrome years ago, but I have tried Chromium. However, I want to be able to view bookmarks in a sidebar, as Firefox (and Safari) allow, and Chromium won’t do that. So although it’s installed, it is almost never used.

My life goes smoothly and in regular intervals

just get more resources and none of this matters :-)

I'm with jdc on this

32GB in a 2017 imac with a ton of open browser windows (4 different browsers in three 'spaces') never running anything more demanding than Photoshop and I don't have slowdown issues.
