Don't know how big yet. A pretty solid shake here in Berkeley.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Here's the map. Tiny quake, but close (less than 3/4 mile sideways and 7 miles down from where I'm at).

You may be in for a BIG shock.

"New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12

When the people living in and near the town of New Madrid in what is now southeastern Missouri went to bed on the night of December 15, 1811, they had no way of knowing that during the pre-dawn hours of the following morning they would be jarred from their peaceful slumber by shock waves that rippled through the earth with such force that buildings collapsed, trees toppled, and the Mississippi River changed course. The explosive force that shattered the stillness of that serene setting was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in North America. During the next two months, the area would be rocked by three more quakes as powerful as the first (one just six hours after the first) and hundreds of smaller ones. The larger quakes shook the earth with enough force to cause church bells to ring in Washington, D.C. They were felt in Indiana and were even felt a thousand miles away in New Hampshire.
Earthquakes since 1811-12

Since the New Madrid quakes, Indiana has felt the effects of many earthquakes (see figure 1). The strongest of these was the 1895 Charleston, Missouri quake, which damaged buildings in Evansville and other parts of southwestern Indiana. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the strongest quake centered in Indiana during historic times struck the Wabash River valley on September 27, 1909. This quake knocked down chimneys, broke windows, and cracked plaster in the lower Wabash Valley and was reportedly felt in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee. More recently, Indiana was shaken in 1987 by a quake centered near Olney, Illinois, just west of Vincennes."

Hope I didn't shake you up too much.

I remember that one well

I was doing some foundation rebuilding work on my old house - a 1890 Queen Anne
and went inside to take a break and get a drink and it hit -

I thought I had really screwed up that time !

I have read about the New Madrid quake, and seen a TV show about it. Also a great novel about what would happen today if it happened again.

That one is about a half mile north along the fault from the batch of three last month. The two halves of Memorial stadium must have moved another 1/2" apart. Oh well, the previous ones have aged off the "current" USGS page.

The newsmedia reported that the '87 quake was felt in Louisville (next to Indiana) but I was not aware of it, and I was old enough to know. It was a work day (Wed) so I know I was up and about so I was much surprised to hear that there had been tremors; maybe it was just a slow news day.

Stories about the impending repeat of the New Madrid quake come in waves every decade or so. I think we're due for the next series in about two years.

I'm here through Sunday. I'm basically here four days a month. A buddy of mine is here antoher four days a month.

I have some real estate questions for the SFO area... you wouldn't happen to know much about that, would ya? For example, do you know any property managers?
