Holy Sink Hole Batman!!!

Great photos
100m deep. Swallowed 1-2 homes. 2-3 people missing. What is really bizarre to me is how well defined this hole is. Most sink holes that I've seen looked more like a dimple that just kept getting bigger and deeper. This looks like someone took a core sample of the earth that was 300+ feet deep.

Yeah, I saw that. 330 feet deep is amazing -- think football field length, only down!

It's called building over a cave. Happens in PA all the time- people build over old mines.

perhaps, but how often does it create a nearly perfectly cylindrical hole perpendicular to the surface that is 100m deep? I saw a large stretch of I-80 do that in Ohio once but it dropped about 3 feet and covered a long stretch of the road. This is a concentrated depression. pretty weird if you ask me.

WHOA, yeah that's not right. Karst sinkholes don't usually do that. Most certainly caused in a large part by man.

cbelt3 is right - it looks like it was a dome (a huge one) which turned into a pit when it's roof collapsed.

Guatemala has possibly one of the longest cave systems in Central America (Candelaria Caves) which is 22km long & the largest chamber is 200m long, 200m wide, and 60m high at some points.

And just for comparison, the deepest cave entrance pit in the world is 410m deep (in Mexico) while the deepest underground drop is 513m (in Croatia).

It's just sad that people lost their lives.

First thing I thought seeing the pics and reading the story-"wow, the earth grew an *$$hole".
But, I wouldn't have thought of, well, 'ripping' (or whatever you call it) a hole.
LOL, incog.

There are supposedly even bigger sinkholes around the world.
Amazing geological calamities.

Actually, the stratification layers in the Guatemala hole are interesting.
