So, I'm convinced. I've got a 2020 27 in iMac. Is this one a good bet? Other suggestions?

You prob want something with adjustable height and tilt so you don’t have to do some sort of a stand under it.

Going to depend on what you are using it for because that will dictate price.

As we know, so long as they have Harry Potter books, height adjustment is not a needed bonus!

I'm very confused about adaptors. Evidently I have 2 thunderbolt ports and I can get a thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor.

Oh, I have lots of big books here.

You do realize that this monitor has very different resolution (number of pixels) than the iMac?

In my 3 monitor photo from yesterday its a 24" + iMac 27"+ 27". I use the 24" for email and text documents, since the pixels are bigger = easier to read.

Or course, not everyone uses screens in the same way.

Tunderbolt really isnt a "port" so much as it is a "speed"... so try not to think of them that way. They are USB C ports that do everything... including video. The cable you will want is USB C to whatever the monitor has, most likely HDMI.

If you arent worried about the height, then you might like something with a thinner bezel, also has a silver back -- and pretty sure this is a brand new 2020 model: Comes in a 27" version.

Theres and adjustable version too: [www.dell.com]

Ive recommended the 32" curved 4K of the "S" series to several clients, they seem happy so far.

Assuming you don't want to go with another 5k monitor ($$$), if you want items to appear the same size when you move them from one screen to the other, you should be looking for a 27" 2560x1440 monitor.

Exactly this. Things will be the same size on both screens though the iMac will be noticeably sharper for text. A $$$ 27" 5K monitor will match the iMac's display resolution and sharpness exactly.

I am using a 4k 24" second monitor with this 5k iMac in retina mode. Works well as second monitor.

it really depends on how u plan on using it... 24" 100lb CRT @ 1920 x 1200 (max 2304 x 1440) + 17" CRT @ 1024 x 768 on a G4 867 (or maybe a 933)

I went ahead and ordered the Dell recommended by jdc and also a usb c to HDMI cord. Coming tomorrow.

I'm mainly going to use the second monitor with zoom calls and also maybe email, etc. The little bit of photo stuff I use I'll use the iMac.

I've got lots to learn! Great having such terrific advice here.

cool. report back!

IPS displays are key if you are going to be using it at an angle.

Let me know if it comes with a USB C to HDMI... Dell is usually great about throwing in a half dozen connection cables -- but since this is a "budget" monitor vs a Ultrasharp wonder what cables they include. (so I can let clients know)

Actually that 17" CRT @ 1024 x 768 is on a Mac IIsi.

Since when does USB C use the same connector as Thunderbolt?

What does that iMac version have?

That Dell is going to look really different from your iMac. I'd cancel that and get a 27" 2560x1440. Here are a couple from slickdeals:

Appreciate the suggestions. However the ones you quote are much too big for my desk. Dell is coming today and I’ll see how I like it.

I have a 21.5" iMac with a old 23 Apple Cinema HD display as my day to day desktop. Usually looking at the Apple display for most stuff.

Usually have Mail open on the iMac window, alerts, and sometimes iTunes open on the original iMac Window while 2nd monitor comes in handy when copying files between drives and USB sticks and surfing the web (1600 x 900 resolution seems perfect for my old eyes)

Had a similar set up for my MacBook Pro but did a THRIFT SHOP SCORE last week for a Samsung Syncmaster S23B550 LED monitor for a few pennies less than $17 that offers HDMI as well as VGA.

Works with the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter from my old monitor but of course snagged a $6 Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and will probably have to buy a HDMI cable too so my THRIFT SHOP SCORE is costing more money to do the same thing - LOL

Dual monitors are always nice. Can't live without them once you start.
