Aw, phooey. Walmart won’t ship to store, won’t deliver.

They’re really not in this to win it unless you drive to a store.

A cheap, nasty ($30) book case they normally do stock in stores is out near me. They won’t move inventory from one store to another, no delivery.

What's the SKU? Maybe one of us can get it & ship to you.

Without access to big retailer shipping rates, likely not worth the effort. That said, did you verify stock at nearby stores with Brickseek.com?

Yeah but not on this item. Too heavy apparently. Was gonna buy 2. I’ll have to decide if a 45 mile round trip + the gas is worth it.

Many wally items are 'in-store' only with no shipping options.
I buy $8 canvas boat shoes that are on their website but in-store only.
When the local store has stock, I'll buy two pairs!

That's weird because I see at least 8 cheapie 3 shelf bookcase with free home delivery at Walmart.com.

Even this 90lb bookcase has free home delivery.

Walmart's strategy was borrowed from the gas & oil industry and is a just-in-time setup. But they've gone beyond that in that they typically don't own any of the inventory on their shelves - they're basically acting like a central clearing house for manufacturers. That makes life difficult on small manufacturers who can't afford to place so much inventory on consignment at thousands of Walmart Stores. So almost every Walmart has a different mix of products on their shelves.

Where I live you can't swing a dead cat without hitting at least a dozen Walmarts, but there's only one that I've found that typically has the brand of pickles that I like on the shelves. And shopping for any type of shoes is like playing Whack-a-mole.

Because Walmart has perfected this marketing strategy to the point where they can undersell most competition, they've driven a lot of the smaller chain and Mom & Pop stores out of business. Think about the number of stores and chains that used to sell shoes for instance - now it comes down to only a handful.

The future probably belongs to Walmart and Amazon unless or until something drastic happens.

From what I can tell, if it’s a product not carried in stores, they want to be Amazon (free delivery/no local pickup). If it’s a product they carry in stores, they may or may not offer to ship it. I haven’t looked that closely at in-store products to know more about that because they’re just down the road.

It’s the middle ground, of leveraging their stores for more local pickup by shipping between stores, that they are either losing business or making me put 45 miles on my vehicle to retrieve product.
