Okay to partition an external drive and use for Time Machine?

Hi,

I picked up a 4TB external and will use it for backup purposes. However, my two internals are 2TB and 1TB and are not nearly full.

Would it be okay to partition the 4TB drive into 3TB and 1TB, and use the 3TB for Time Machine, saving the 1TB for something else? Or, would this be a problem for TM?

It should be fine.

I use a partition for TM backups, although it is an internal.

No problem at all. In fact, it's often advised.

I sometimes deploy a backup drive partitioned for both a clone and a Time Machine backup.

So long as Time Machine has sufficient capacity for its backups and the TM data is the only thing on the target-volume, it works great.
