I don't think you can find real N95, at least not for a decent price. I had a few left over from some projects, 2 of them were really old and the rubber band snapped off, the 3rd one is still unopened in the package but that has an exhaust valve, which is not fair game. The mask was initially suppose to protect others (prevent you from spreading the virus), although there is now evidence that the mask will also protect you. So yes, that N95 with mask would protect me but not those around me, so I don't wear it. And I guess the rubber bands would snap off too.

Just get some reputable KN95 instead.

I bought authentic 3M N95 on eBay, box of 20 for $60. Best deal I could find on these.

N95 masks are ALL about protecting you. Side benefit, if no vent, is they protect others just like any other mask. Cloth masks? Those are about protecting others and to a lesser extent yourself.

Without fit testing, there's no guarantee that an N95 produces the seal necessary to achieve its full protection, and it may provide little—if any—more benefit than a lesser mask.

You said that " The mask was initially suppose to protect others". I was just pointing out that it has never been the case for the N95. That mask has always been about protecting the wearer.

OK fair point. I was talking about the masks in general, not referring to N95, but you are right, N95 is about protecting you.

What's the argument that the N95 protects others less than it protects the wearer (assuming proper fit, in both cases)? That your exhale leaks around the edges, but the inhale does not? I suppose I could see that, but....

With respect, it's usually pretty easy to test fit with N95's ... there are instructions right on the package (and also on the web from 3M), and usually with well-made N95's, it's easy to tell that the fit is good... it becomes a whole lot harder to breathe.

Very true. Healthcare environment to get fitted properly.

Exactly my feeling on this, having a few N95s left over, and well worn and coveted. I'd gather that even a rudimentary fitted N95 is probably better than the vast majority of regular masks you see folks wearing, loosely fitted and fogging up glasses. I know because my glasses fog all the time with the surgical style masks and very little with an N95.

You can do all that, but like I said, it's written right on the package how to test fit. If you want to be absolutely sure, yes, you can do sophisticated tests like in the video, but for the average user... they can usually tell that fit is good... and barring things like facial hair, etc., in my experience the fit is very tight and likely to be correct.

My N95 feels tight. It may not measure up to par, but it feels like it's fitting well.

N95s are geared towards occupational safety, rather than being intended for average users, and mask feel isn’t evidence of fit for this purpose. I’ve been fitted, when I worked at the hospital; unless it’s extremely too large or too small for your face, most feel tight, but that doesn’t mean unfiltered air won’t be admitted—especially dynamically. A fit test challenges the seal against movement; e.g. changes in expression or head position, and after talking.

I find it hard to understand what people say when they weak masks. When I could see their lips it was easier to understand them, even in noisy environments.

Even a poorly fitted N95 has to be better than 9x% of the masks people are now wearing. I don't even see this as debatable.

It was a little farther back than that, but I got a box of 20 Bel-Cor N95s for about $18.

Those were the good ol' days.

I wonder if we'll ever see prices like that, again.

When I heard the voice, I immediately thought of George Takei (Sulu).

I knew it wasn't him, but I was reminded, as I always liked his speaking voice.

Anyway, I check my N95 fit two ways– one, as shown, to minimize glasses fogging/

Two, by inhaling and feeling the mask sucked against my face, so as not to leak while inhaling.

A hold over from using a gas mask and a SCBA variant, we'd pinch both hoses and inhale.

If you got any air inside, the mask was too loose and needed adjustment.

Once fitted, we broke the top two straps loose, and the mask was ready to be donned in a hurry.

The problem with those is that the "anti-fog guard" does not really filter anything. And is the path of least resistance. I bought them and never used them once I realized this. I may put them over vented N95s in the future.

That's not a problem, that's the way it should work.

In order to filter anything it would have to allow the passage of air, which is what causes fogging in the first place.

And is the path of least resistance.

Fair point.

It doesn't appear to have any shaping/shape retaining ability to conform to the nose.

This why pRICE mentioned those metal clips.

Get them to stick and conform, and the mask will help reduce fogging of glasses.

I think that would be a better utilization than wearing them over N95s.

Probably any mask that sealed agains one's nose securely could be made less fog-inducing by sealing a portion of the mask against air flow, near the nose piece.

This would reduce the filtering surface of the mask slightly but might afford some anti-fogging by not allowing warm are to escape the mask so close to glasses.

Might not make a difference for heavy breathers/obscene phone callers.
