Faxing from a mac in 2020?
Posted by: weapon

Long ago I got rid of my fax machine along with my home phone line.

Now I am dealing with the state/medical offices and they only accept faxes or letters. It is becoming annoying to have to run to kinkos every time they need an updated piece of paperwork.

Is there a free and easy way to send faxes from my mac using your basic home setup (comcast modem/router/wifi)?

Recommended service or software?

thanks

Yes, I suspect the last place for faxes is medical and government offices. I have used SRFax.com for about 4-5 years. I think I pay 200 pages a month without cost for about $70/year. They have a service for $36 a year and give you 25 pages a month. they give you a number for the senders fax. I had the old separate fax machine, working off the phone line, but this is much better. They have a HIPPA compliant plan for medical too.

QFE. This has worked well for me for the 1 or 2 faxes a year I send.

MarkD,

Financial institutions, schools, lawyers, too. Some have secure gateways for uploading items but some also still rely on faxes. Doctor's offices are notorious for relying on in person drop-off, mail and faxing. No email. Crazy as it sounds, this is one of the reasons I've always owned an all-in-one machine that prints, scans, copies and faxes. Now that I moved my home line to Google Voice and my wife has a Google Voice line, I added a Obihai VOIP adapter the mix. I use it with my GV number for calls. We use her GV number for faxing. Works great.

Much safer than email. Much less convenient, too.

I have not had to fax anything for like 10 years. Now that I am dealing with more doctors it is going to be needed.

I just came across a CD with Fax STF from a blue and white G3 Mac from 1998.

I wonder if faxing will make a sort of comeback? I'm serious, with all of the concern for privacy now (or, at least, concern that is now widely accepted).

To the indolent town
Where the barkers call the moon down

When I was in a similar situation, I splurged and bought a HP color laser copier/fax with duplex and auto-feed.

Figured I could at least use it for b/w and color prints/copies when not faxing.

It has turned out to be a very good investment because in addition to faxing to various doctors I've also had to copy a lot of test-results (including color-images from the various cameras they've been sticking in me), and lots and lots of bills, and I've been photocopying checks from payments, and with two-sided printing it's cheaper to operate than my last laser and waaaay cheaper than my inkjet all-in-one (that doesn't fax) would be.

I mostly stick to black and white prints and have yet to need to change a color toner cartridge from the "starter" cartridges it came with... Tho I'm on my third high-capacity black cartridge.

If you have a real landline, fire up an old Mac and modem, then use GlobalFax.

I have two or three nice fax machines but my older Ooma won’t handle faxing.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Robert

Thanks for the great ideas. My dad got one of the nice dell all in ones that maybe I need to set up for faxes. I did not even get VOIP until about a year ago. Under the old POTS system had to juggle and time the line for fax. So much hassle, I gave away a dedicated fax machine and kept a canon fax, printer, copier just for the copy capacity.
