Recommendations For Good Computer Speakers?
Posted by: Carthaigh

I need to replace my current computer speakers with some new 2.1 speakers with excellent sound quality. I am currently looking at these:

Altec Lansing FX6021 3-Piece System
[www.amazon.com]

Logitech Z-2300 2.1 THX-Certified 200-Watt Speaker System
[www.amazon.com]

Are these any good? Can anybody recommend a set of speakers that audiophiles would enjoy?

They're not 2.1 speakers, but you can't do any better than the Swans M200s at NewEgg.

Klipsch Promedia 2.1s. There is no better computer speaker. Some will argue that their are cleaper ones that are almost as good, but these are hands down the best 2.1 computer speaker on the market.

At the risk of possibly losing my Audiophile License due to ignoring modern speakers, I've been using some AppleDesign Powered Speakers for several years --- probably because their sins are primarily those of omission, not commission.

Specifically, they have no real bass nor do they attempt it, so they don't sound boomy or muddy. Mids and highs sound clean although off-axis response isn't good. But then again, as long as you're in front of them that isn't a problem.

Are you using the Swan's with your computer? They look pretty good, but I have not heard of them before.

I did a ton of research into this about a year ago to replace some Cambridge Soundworks speakers that I had for many years and finally died on me. The Cambridge Soundworks were fantastic sounding speakers, perhaps the best I ever heard for the money.

The Swans got very good reviews but were a little more than I cared to spend. I was also looking for a 2.1 system.

The Logitech Z-2300's are nice. A friend of mine has them. They are a little bassy for my tastes but great for the price.

I wound up buying Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's. They sound fantastic. I haven't regretted the purchase one bit.

Those swans look interesting. Would still need to get a sub with them. I'd listen to them next to a set of Promedia 2.1s. Do any B&M stores carry them? No way I will buy a set of speakers without listening to them first.

I'm a complete unsophisticate in this regard, but I think I should mention that if VOLUME is not your main priority, the Harmon-Kardon soundsticks (around $150 or less if you shop) sound pretty good to me.

Another vote for the 2.1 ProMedias here. I've loved mine from the first day I got them.

The Klipsch 2.1 are the best computer speakers i have listened to so far.

That said... while here in the Seattle area I picked up the 2.1 JBL Creature speakers for
under $50 they are actually decent , although not robust ,nor do they have the best
seperation, and the bass can muddy some tunes.

I listened to a bunch of these last weekend. The Klipsch had the nicest subwoofer of all of them, but I really disliked everything else. The logitech were middle of the road. I liked the overall sound of the Altec's the best. They didn't sound as exciting, but exciting grates on me after awhile. I was looking at those Swans. Interesting. I see that they use the "Hi Vi" components you can buy at madisound etc. They wouldn't have very good bass, but otherwise, I'm sure they would have better sound than any of these (unless you're into rock or hip hop etc). kj.

Klipsch Promedia 2.1s. There is no better computer speaker.

I disagree.

The Audio Engine 5s are a much more musical speaker, and would compare to many better bookshelf speakers, and they're powered. They're a 2.0 speaker (no "sub") but as in the case of deckada's observation, they don't attempt to be what they aren't.

The Klipsch Pro Media are "computer speakers", and in *that* genre are some of the loudest available, and are fairly clean sounding. But they are computer speakers nonetheless. Given the pricing on them and factory seconds (minor blems, only) they're a great value.

The AE5's are more than you want to spend and are not a 2.1 system, but they are easily superior to the ProMedia's in all but deeper bass, though they are marketed as "computer speakers". Also, they have a bigger footprint than most speakers, but I can live with that.

I've got the PM 2.1s and Creatures (which I really like because of the *tiny* footprints) and within their limitations, they sound quite good.

But the AEs-- like buttah.

Has anybody heard these Altec Lansing PT6021s? They are new and are supposed to be the pro audio version of the FX6021.

I saw these for $99 at Best Buy last fall. I didn't jump on it and BB screwed me (out of stock, no rain check). Why is it that computer speakers so rarely go on sale?

I still like my $15 JBL Creatures, not the best sounding but that do look great along side an
Apple Display. They can't match my Klipsch Cornwalls that's for sure.

Check the photos and review of the AudioEngine 5s at this site:

[froogle.google.com]

They should sound good at that price. I didn't pay that much for my used mint cond. Cornwalls.

some amusing reading
[forum.ecoustics.com]

I paid about $90 w/shipping for RSL speakers when they were briefly around a couple years ago.
Seems crazy to me to spend more then a buck for computer speakers, unless all your music is on your HD at CD sample rate not MP3s.

Can't buy 'em new, but the Monsoon MM-1000's beat everything else I've heard--palpably alive. For listening at a computer, these compare with $4,000 high-end home stereo pairs I've listened to.

$15 Creatures? Wow, that was a deal. I paid more for mine a few years ago, but like 'em just fine for the most part.

Since our office and living room are in one large front room, I'd probably buy an AppleTV and stream music to our main stereo before I upgrade my computer speakers.

I have had the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks II plugged in for about a year now. Pretty good sound while playing CDs on my Powerbook.

I picked them up for $89(?) on sale. If i had to do it all over again i would get some speakers that were a bit more discreet. Like little cube speakers and a subwoofer that i can hide under the table. These soundsticks are so nice looking (IMO) i can't bear to put the woofer under the table where it'll surely get knocked around by my big feet and get covered with an inch of dust and cobwebs.

Yard Sale bargain. They were sitting down in a brown bag and said how much and they said $15 and I said sold.
