Company running ads for medicare benefits review

I was flipping channels and came across an ad from an "Assurance" company, a Medicare Benefits Hotline.

They say "free no obligation..." and they claim they can review your benefits and many find additional benefits for you. Like free eye glasses, over the counter allowance, $0 copays, etc.

So how do they make money?

It’s supplemental insurance. No charge to talk to them. No additional cost except for that pesky premium.

Medicare Advantage plan.

Can’t really discuss without flipping this over to the other side.

Referral companies are paid commissions by the insurance companies. btw, you can
get the same info direct from CMS @ medicare.gov !
Same way when you see an ad for lawyers recruiting clients for class action cases.
The firm running the ad is paid by the lead law firm who then farm the case work
out to a firm licensed in your jurisdiction.

Can’t really discuss without flipping this over to the other side.
No, he simply asked how they make money and it's a simple answer.

If you watch any of the Old Fart channels, you are bombarded with dodgy Medicare pitches. I am sick to death of Joe Namath at this point.

Yes, I feel sorry for old folks that aren't able to read the small print, and don't understand who is running the ad. With the red white and blue medicare card, you would think it was the government doing you a favor, but it is not.

Another annoyance is the Reverse Mortgage. Tom Selleck really tries to tell you that it is not a scam to take your house.

I'm surprised at just how whiney Joe sounded. I have to wonder just how much he's getting paid and, if he's fallen so far that he needs whatever crumbs he's paid for becoming a shill.

I'm an old fart and the part of the pitch that bothers me is the claim that they can put something like $140/mo back into your monthly Social Security check. Yeah, but then you're paying for your Part B on your own and you loose the protection of Medicare premium increases. By law, if you pay for your Part B out of your SS then your Medicare premium increase is capped by the amount of your SS increase; that's not the case if you pay for your Part B directly. Not many who are on or approaching 65 and filing for Medicare know this.

... that they can put something like $140/mo back into your monthly Social Security check

fine print: To get that benefit, you must qualify under your state's Medicaid
(ie-low income) and be enrolled in the state's programs.
iow, in most states you have to be poor &/or in a 'assisted living' facility that has
drained your life's savings!

O.P.: They make money from commissions by selling you a Medicare Advantage plan. (The phone lines have to be staffed by licensed insurance agents.)

Because it's not true? I have no idea what you're talking about and I have been licensed and certified for Medicare Advantage and PDPs for years. Medicare Part B premiums are what they are. Increases happen whether you have automatic deduction from your Social Security or you pay them separately. (However, I will admit that I'm not an expert on Social Security; I'm not on SS and it's not central to my knowledge as an insurance agent.)

There are some Medicare Advantage plans that do in fact 'rebate' all or a portion of your Medicare Part B premiums. These are generally plans with lower benefits and only available where the Medicare reimbursement rate is high.
