I have an ADATA xpg sx8200 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD and a Sabrent USB 3.1 enclosure for use as a backup on my iMac 2015 running High Sierra. What should I choose for format and scheme?

APFS is what I would use. It will make the transition to your next OS simpler and cleaner.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

If you're only connecting it to a Mac, then AFPS is the way to go. Does HiSi use AFPS?

Time Machine? Whatever the default is... HFS+ ext journaled...

Thats a wicked fast drive for just backup? And a $50 enclosure?

Yeah, someone who actually knows what they're talking about should be by soon and give the straight poop, but...

HFS+ Journaled and GUID because I think TM drives are not supposed to be APFS.

Wolf,

Can't speak for the requirements for Time Machine but, if you plan to use a cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner to make the backup, format the drive as APFS. This assumes you're running a version of the OS that recognizes NVME drives. I believe you need High Sierra or newer. I'm running Mojave on all of mine.

I've formatted all of the external SSDs (NVME and 2.5") I'm using as boot drives, clones and data drives as APFS drives. No issues at all. None are used for Time Machine.

Note, I was under the impression, NVME drives weren't compatible with HFS+, so you might not have a choice but to go with APFS. Hopefully, someone can confirm/clarify/etc.

I'm running all my M.2 NVMe drives (installed internally) as HFS+ on High Sierra.

Gareth,

Ah! I stand corrected. High Sierra might be the requirement. I suspect my confusion relates to OWC Aura Pro X2 drives which are designed for use with APFS and require OS X High Sierra.
