Solved: Time Machine trouble with new external SSD
Posted by: Buck
Date: October 22, 2020 04:15PM
I picked up a Sandisk 1TB SSD at Costco, to first be used with time machine, on a Sierra MBP.
All I get is this weird screen with no option to pick my drive, and start copying. I'm stumped for now.
Cancel looks like the only option.

You need to format the drive to HFS+

it probably arrived with PC format. Then you have to tell your mac that you want to use this drive for TM backup.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

I've always had an issue with Time Machine where, if I have "Displays have separate Spaces" checked (which I prefer, so I can more easily full-screen movies on one of the displays), I get a black box frakking up the entire Time Machine layout. (I'm probably going to give Time Machine the final heave-ho soon, as I do multiple clones daily via CCC).

The image shows that you selected 'Enter Time Machine'. That's what you do when you are trying to recover files - that is not how you set up a new drive for TM.

Yes I reformatted, like several other drives.
I never saw the option to choose the drive as a Time Machine backup.
It goes straight to that screen when I launch Time Machine

Time Machine can't use drives that are formatted as APFS-the format MUST be HFS+

OK it's solved (I think). I had to add the drive manually.

"If Time Machine doesn't ask to use your drive, follow these steps to add it manually:
Open Time Machine preferences from the Time Machine Time Machine icon menu in the menu bar. Or choose Apple (?) menu > System Preferences, then click Time Machine."
