Printing help needed

I need some help. I have a 2017 iMac running Mojave and suddenly my HP Laserjet 1320 (good old printer) keeps switching to pause when trying to print, it printed fine yesterday. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the printer 3 or 4 times, reset the “Printing System” several times and even tried latest Gutenprint drivers. I also tried to a new USB cable with no change. Several seconds after I select print the green pause appears on the printer icon, I open the printer queue and select resume it switches back to pause. Using the same cable I plugged the printer into my old 2006 iMac and the printer prints fine so I don’t think it’s the printer. Any ideas?

I don't know the answer for yours, but I just spent an hour trying to figure out why my printer won't print today. It worked yesterday.

I ended up having to delete the printer and select Airprint for the driver instead of the device driver. Secure airprint wouldn't work either.

The printer error log states "Unable to use legacy USB class driver". Very weird because I haven't changed any settings or installed anything for weeks. I searched and found a HP website titled "HP LaserJet - Older HP printers with macOS drivers" and download the one for 10.9 and newer, using that driver it's printing again.

Using CUPS or an HP provided 'driver'?

I'm on Mojave and all five of my printers are controlled by CUPS. [www.cups.org]
Brother Laser and a Brother AIO: network printers
Brother QL-700, Dymo LW Duo, & NETUM NT-8006 4" Thermal: USB 2.0
They all "play nicely" using mfr. supplied PPDs and just work.

Haven't used an HP printer in decades but I would suspect any HP authored driver.
Their printer biz is tied to Windows, that's where the $$$ is. Mac, Unix, & Linux
are just an afterthought.

I wonder if there is some security certificate that expired. Now you fixed it , but it would have been interesting to roll the date back a week or so and see it if printed.

Remember when Apple let some certificate expire and older OS CDs would not install unless you rolled the date back? maybe it's something like that.

The latest updates for Mojave and Catalina now trigger a popup when old printer drivers are present for old printers.

The popup instructs the user to use Airprint because updated drivers for the printer are unavailable. In my own experiments, the old drivers continued to work fine, but it's possible that Apple is disabling some printer drivers for whatever reason they do stuff like that.

I'm suddenly having the same problem with my HP, too. I printed fine yesterday, but nothing will print today except test pages. They're fine! I've deleted, re-added, restarted. Now what?

Apple screwed up something royally and it wasn't an update that did it. I had all my updates pending and hadn't installed anything new when it stopped working.

So it was a certificate issue?
