I have two nest thermostats and each has failed and now I'm wondering how common smart thermostat failure is.

I have a internet connected Honeywell thermostat. It operates like any other thermostat and I can access it from a webpage. I wouldn’t bother with the fancy ones that display ads. Thermostats have one job to do.

Old house was a 1928 side-stair colonial (relatively compact) with steam heat and someone in the house pretty much at all times. A regular digital thermostat was perfect as the only variation was lowering temp at night. Otherwise I believe steam heat works best when it's consistent.

New house is a 1958 ranch (spread out) with forced air. I put in an Ecobee with remote sensors as it can react quicker and heat based on where people are. So far happy with it. Chose Ecobee over Nest primarily because of the remote sensors and also better reporting functions.

Being retired, I have no need for a smart t'stat. We just set it for the desired temp for heat or cool and forget it.

My opinion, battery-powered thermostats should be illegal.

Bryant thermostat that came with the new HVAC system about 4 years ago. No issues....other than the usual that every thermostat designer comes up with their own idea of a user interface. Confuses the techs every season when they come out to do an inspection covered by the maintenance plan.

Gen II NEST from 2014 is fine. Tied into the 28V thermostat power. I do expect the battery will go out in the next few years.

I work from home, and Mrs. cbelt3 is retired / disabled. I cannot begin to count how many trips downstairs to the thermostat this has saved me because "I'm hot ! I'm cold !" complaints from Senior Management.

We have had a Sensi since 2015, always running on battery power due to older wiring and the lack of a C-wire, and it has performed flawlessly with both its companion app and with Alexa. I replace the batteries (two AA) annually "just because", but they have never died within the space of any year.

Why? I've had a battery powered thermostat for 15+ years, and just have to replace the batteries every 4 years or so.

Maybe I just had bad luck. If I ever got a year out of a set of batteries in a thermostat it was a good thing. And they always die during an active heating/cooling season.

Just a programmable semi-literate thermostat here. I was looking at a Honeywell but decided I could walk 15-feet for $100. However, I will be watching the reviews on the new Wyze one @ $50.

My Honeywell worked briefly, but one day I got a message saying it got disconnected and I've never been able to reconnect it. It works fine manually, but not via the app.

I've had a Honeywell as well as a EcoBee 3. Both work great, upgraded to the Ecobee because I wanted remote temp sensors.

I find the Nest learning features to be useless although I do think its the best looking unit. I'm a bit frustrated that it doesn't connect to other home automation systems like it did pre-google. If I was buying again, I might look elsewhere but I'm not certain I'd choose something else.

Wanting to pare software and hardware across vendors seems like a common smart device desire.

Nest had a couple of notable outages causing no heat (though admittedly it has been a couple of years) - no thanx.

Of course my mom's mechanical thermostat stuck on and it got hot enough to melt candles once.

I had ecobee at the old house, worked fine for about 5 years until I sold the house. I am sure it still works fine.

I have 2 new ecobee that that I plan to install here, I just didn't get around to it.
