Can't unpause printer - help?

imac 10.15.7
HP 1320
connected to imac via usb
printer shows in about this mac
deleted printer and re-added
unplugged for 30 seconds
The printer will print a test page if i hit button on printer

When I go to print it doesn't print. Says that printer is paused. I hit resume and a second later it flips to paused. Been working fine for years, nothing has changed.

Leave it unplugged overnight. Then try printing from a different Mac.

that printer was first sold 16 years ago - it might just be too old for the current OS. Did it work under any version of Catalina? I'd be shocked if the old driver was 64bit. As best I can tell, the last driver was for compatibility with 10.9.

I'm suddenly having the same problem. I printed fine to my HP yesterday and can print test pages today, but no documents. I've restarted printer and iMac, deleted printer and re-added. What's going on?

Maybe try setting the date back a few days. If nothing else has changed, that's something that has. It's a long shot.

hal, its old but works great and I have an identical one at work that also still works and it worked yesterday. There has been no change in os overnight.

I was able to access the Certificate information through the Utility tab, but it expires 2027, so that's not the issue. We also tried hard-wiring instead of printing over Wi-Fi, but that didn't work either. Finally, we printed over the network to our old, reliable HP 4100. No problems!

I had the same problem yesterday with my HP Laserjet 1320. I went to this HP website titled "HP LaserJet - Older HP printers with macOS drivers" [support.hp.com] downloaded and installed HP driver "For OS X 10.9 and newer". Re-installed the printer using this driver and the printer now works. I thought it was just me having this problem, relieved to see someone else with having the same issue with the same printer although I'm using Mojave. My post is 14 posts below this one.

For me, the network page shows that the Certificate expires 2027. It's a fairly new HP printer.
We were able to print via the network on a TWENTY YEAR OLD HP 4100.
Update: We were finally able to print to the HP ColorLaserJet M278-M281 via USB after deleting and re-adding it.

Update: We deleted the USB printer and re-added the printer using Bonjour. Now it works!

PS - In between all this, we also updated the printer ON the printer itself. On its touch screen from the Home menu, scroll over to Setup/Service/LaserJet Update/Check for Updates now/Install now. Not sure if that helped anything as we still weren't able to print after updating and continued to troubleshoot until the last.

Up until 5 years ago, I had 8-10 HP4000's. When I got them (literally a pallet-full of used printers for $50), they already had 80,000-120,000 prints, and we put as much again on them before we started swapping them out with newer printers. Tanks. They were built like tanks. Not fast, but they just kept chugging away.
