Not much room in the garage on either side of the car
Posted by: Greg the dogsitter

I know the tennis ball trick to tell whether a vehicle is far enough into a garage, but what can I use to avoid bonking into the obstacles on either side?

Tennis ball trick: Park the car correctly, then hang a tennis ball from the ceiling so it just barely touches the hood, or window, or hood ornament, or whatever. Parking then becomes easier next time, because you know when to stop pulling forward.

Sorry about your glasses. Have you checked your contract?

You can do the tennis ball trick for left/right too. Just hang it so you are driving right into it in front of you.

why do you need all these tricks to park a car? just get a feeling of the size of the car and the size of garage. I can park with clearance as low as 1-2" in either side of the car, Sure, it takes concentration, but it can be done.

So the trick to correctly parking a car is to correctly park a car?

Thanks! I'll make a note!

There are these things called mirrors. You use them with your eyes in your head to see if there is anything in the way.

That's very much. Where would you suggest putting these mirrors?

grad,

I figured you were serious. I figured that everyone was serious except Seacrest, who is a big meanie. Anyhoo, I don't think I'll be getting a Lexus soon. But that's a nifty technology.

I'll knock out the wall that's on one side and the support post holding up half the house that's on the other side and will get back to you. From the hospital. :-)

Thanks for that, but the car has a wall on one side and a structural support pole on the other.

I have tennis balls hanging in both garages. But I lost one of the tennis balls, so I had to replace it with this rubber ball that looks like a big eye. Kinda like these. grinning smiley

I do something similar to the tennis ball trick.

I always back into the garage, and I picked a nice spot on the back wall and aim for it with back corner of the car, using the side mirror.

Nail 2x4's to the floor to guide the car into it's spot, just like at the carwash.

Greg, I thought you were a native Californian. I thought it was your birthright to not have to park your car(s) in the garage. Most of the dolts out here use the garage for anything other than parking a car (generally filled with crap piled on top of other crap). Do you have to relinquish that when you move out of state?

So, what changes every time you park, the width of the car, or the placement of the structures in the garage?

Put a mark on the floor, or some sort of "bump" and bobs your uncle.
Or, look how far you are from the closest structure on the drivers side of the vehicle. Useless if the width of the vehicle changes randomly. You got a rubber car?

I'm trying to figure out if it's that tight a squeeze, how you can even get into and out of the car.

Rusty, at my age (147), I'm pretty good on my strengths and weaknesses. Being a careful driver is one of them. Spatial relations, with me in the car, isn't. My first two cars were a '77 Olds Cutlass, followed by a '73 Sedan de Ville; I can't get them out of my head. :-)

Years ago some cars had little antennae-like things that stuck out low from the side of the car to let you know when you were getting too close to the curb (they made a noise).

Could you somehow use this technique? If not on your cars, perhaps on your walls?

Also, could you cover the support pole with some dense foam padding so you can park as close as possible to it?

I have every confidence that after those two, a Civic would be cake. I'm sure that you'd even be able to park Kathy's Camaro, if she'd ever let you.

Were you 113 when you started driving?
You must be some slow-ass careful driver if you have no spatial acuity.
Good luck parking!

A serious suggestion...

Concentrate just on the driver's side. align your mirror against the closest thing on that side and learn how to judge it. The other side is then a done deal.

When I drive into my garage, I line up, and as I enter, I adjust myself so that the driver's mirror misses the edge of the garage door by about two or three inches. It's not that hard since I'm right there... heh.

I use a 2x4 attached to the floor with carpet tape to set my stopping point so that the garage door will JUST clear the back of the vehicle.

Don't ask who the bell's for, dude. It's you.

I would suggest practicing. This way when you have to park in a similar small space, you will be able to do it more easily. Many places near me have parking spots that are so small a full-size car is wider than them. My mid-sized car only gives me about 8-10" on each side. So when I park, I have 16-20" between me and the next car. I have to park it perfectly or I wouldn't be able to get out (or the passenger.)

But if you really want an assistive device, you nailed it earlier on. Hang a ball that hits your hood ornament. If you're too far to one side or the other, you wont hit the hood ornament.

My Skylark droptop has scratches and white paint smeared on the sides from the little old lady original owner parking by braille.

Find some other method.

Or, a bigger garage.
