Battening down the hatches for Zeta...
Posted by: PeterB

Currently estimated to be a Cat 1 when it hits, definitely hitting us this time instead of going elsewhere.

Mostly I'm concerned with street flooding and possible tornado development, and of course power outages (lack of AC is misery) and nondrinkable water.

Have spoken to family & friends in the region; ditto what PeterB said re/street flooding and etc.

Everyone is home from work at this point, general precautions taken. When I was a kid in N.O., businesses didn't even close during a Cat 1. Restaurants and etc. pretty much always stayed open unless there was a direct threat -- and of course, Zeta's track is direct. And it'll likely be a 2 when it makes landfall.

Good news, generally, is that it's a fast-moving storm. Still worrisome for wind and storm surge, but not as much for rain, as it will not meander over the area and just dump water on the area.

Watching the live coverage feed via WWL-TV New Orleans via [www.wwltv.com] ; if you're curious, it's well worth watching for a bit to see how the area governments (both State and Parish) (aka County) react and approach the event.

Watching the feed on the bottom of the screen; a bit of a chuckle. Of course, all the schools are closed (I'm unsure of the COVID situation area-wide) but many are saying "VIRTUAL CLASSES WEDNESDAY". Sucks to be a student in a modern world. (of course, the new "dog ate my homework" is "our internet/power went out")

Ha (about schools being closed) ... since I teach online, I am still teaching all this afternoon ... could get interesting if I or the students lose power and/or internet.
