I... saw a young man die today when a tree fell on his pickup truck...

And if I had been 10 seconds later, it would have been me....

I was driving home this morning in heavy rain and wind after picking up doughnuts for the family. Driving along a 2 lane state highway near our house. And about 100 yards ahead I saw a huge tree (100' plus tall, easily 5 feet in diameter) fall across the road. I saw it collapse across white truck, then the branches covered the truck. And then the top of the tree took out high voltage power lines, dropping a transformer which exploded in sparks and flame.

And 50 yards ahead of me another younger man in a red pickup screamed "Stooooooppppp !". And raced ahead, stopped, and leaped out of his truck. I pulled over and ran over as well, looking for the power line which was still smoking. Called 911. And just... stared. Remembering rule #1 - don't become another casualty. I did not try to approach the tree, fearing it was connected to 15KV. Fire/EMS arrived two minutes later (the station is half a mile away), and I went home.

And hour later my wife read me the article in the local news, that two pickup trucks had been crushed, and the one I saw.. a 26 year old man, had not survived. The other driver was very lucky, and just mild injuries.

I am still processing this. I am still shaken.

Love your family and friends, folks. You never know when you will just .. stop.

Sorry you had to see that. I've had a couple of those experiences in my life time and some of them replayed for years in my dreams and daydreams. As unpleasant as it is, those experiences do a lot to shape how we think and what we do in the future.

Hopefully you can seek out some positive happy experiences very soon to overpower those other memories.

Sorry for this. It is a measure on how far our culture/society has come (some would say how soft) that seeing a fellow human lose his his life is more that just....whatever.

Hopefully all humans will get to this point and cherish all human life....

Sorry you had to experience that. Just another reminder that life is short, and to check on the people you care about and make sure they're OK.

WTF?!

I am that Masked Man.

All you can do, is all you can do.

There’s trouble — it's time to play the sound of my people.

Your boos mean nothing to me, I've seen what you cheer for.

Insisting on your rights without acknowledging your responsibilities isn’t freedom, it’s adolescence.

I've been to the edge of the map, and there be monsters.

We are a government of laws, not men.

Everybody counts or nobody counts.

When a good man is hurt,
all who would be called good
must suffer with him.

You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead.

There is no safety for honest men except
by believing all possible evil of evil men.

We don’t do focus groups. They just ensure that you don’t offend anyone, and produce bland inoffensive products. —Sir Jonathan Ive

An armed society is a polite society.
And hope is a lousy defense.

You make me pull, I'll put you down.

I *love* SIGs. It's Glocks I hate.

Seeing something as terrible as this, and having such a close call yourself, can lead to PTSD. If you find yourself having nightmares or disturbing recurring thoughts of this event or find yourself easily startled, please do not hesitate to seek professional help.

I’m so sorry you went through this, and so sorry for the death of the young man.

Hope you can get past the trauma, cbelt.

So Sorry. I recall seeing a death (motorcycle crash, single vehicle) just after it occurred, and it's stayed with me for years.

Yeah, geeze, that's awful.

I guess maybe 15 years ago, I heard some guy get crushed by a car.

He was a young college kid, with his arms full of books he had just bought from the bookstore on the first day of school.

I heard the accident, I turned to look, and he was down in the middle of the road.

Jaywalking...trying to catch the bus that was getting ready to take off.

The speed limit there was 40-45. I doubt he made it.

FWIW they just released his name. He went to the same high school my older kids did. Art contest winner. I don't know anything about his life after that.

This is not the first violent death I've ever witnessed. Hell, I witnessed a young man get shot to death when I was about 8 years old. I've seen and responded (*) to several fatal accidents. But every single one stays with me, and I talk about them and remember them and try to learn and teach about them.

(*) as a citizen carrying my car's first aid kit and fire extinguisher, hoping I can help. No training beyond Red Cross and Scouts. Which training probably saved my life in this case, because without it I might have climbed onto the tree to help and been struck down by high voltage.

The memories diminish, but never go away. I was witness to a road death myself about 40 years ago, it took years for it to become an occasional memory. Friends helped.

And the age was similar, mid-20s grad student from Thailand, and only son of the family. He had just got off the bus I was driving, crossed behind the bus like he should, and a drunk driver leaving the bar about 3/4 mile back ran him over. Fortunately missed the other dozen or so other passengers crossing at the same place to go to their apartments.

The Associated Press is reporting this incident, and that’s being picked up by newspapers all over; page 2 of Monday’s Wall Street Journal.
