Photoshop pros: any quick way to remove power lines on complex background? Date: November 05, 2020 10:04AM |
I'm removing power lines from the photo below. I've done this a number of times before but this photo is obviously tedious due to the complexity of the houses in it. I've read quite a few tutorials on Google and tried other software but it's pretty much all the same and I still find cloning, while very slow, is the best way to go, with spot healing used in some less complex areas. Is there any tool out there that makes a quicker job of this or a technique that is quicker than cloning?

Patch tool may handle some of those areas
Yeah, I’ve used that too. It’s not perfect and I need some cloning when done to get edges to match.

Wish I could help. I've used all the tools in CS6 in different ways - patch, clone...
Over the summer I did a branding project for a non-profit. New logo, new colors, new fonts, style guide, sample PPT templates... when it was all done, I looked back and realized there was one thing that took the most amount of effort: removing the powerlines from the photo of their building.

Agree, on the right track.
One tip I use when retouching -- realize that if you delete something -- no one will ever know it *wasnt* there.
For example -- you could have selected the entire sky, wires and all, and replaced it with a differnt simlar stock sky. No one would have known the difference. But would have saved TONS of time retouching each individual wire. Or things like that little metal rod sticking up from the roof on the left house. You could have just cloned the whole thing out. No one would have noticed.
Assuming you will fix the perspective when done?

Yes, I already corrected some of the keystoning to get started but I will straighten them out further after I remove the lines.

Among other things, it has a specific function for line removal purposes.
I was looking at that yesterday, but I'm looking for something for Mac OS on my MP. It looked like it was only for iOS.

I tried it but it is pretty much is like other tools I've tried, it can't handle the background and pretty much replaces the lines with a mishmash of surrounding pixel areas.

Looks like it can all be done with the rubber stamp tool and about 20-25 minutes of work on a new layer.
Sample slightly above and off-center so you don't get distracting patterns/blotches. Do long straight lines by shift-clicking, and have a hand read to jump on Command+Z when you go too quickly and mess up a detail. Skip places where you have intersecting lines and save those for last where you nibble at them with a smaller brush.

Looks like you've done most of the work already, and don't have too much more to go! I agree, a mix of tools will be needed. However, the Content-Aware Patch can make super quick work on some areas, such as the siding where there is plenty of pattern to use.
And when you're done, that brand new Sky Replacement function is an awesome way to change the look & feel of your photo without much effort at all. I'm having lots of fun with it. Good luck!
I’ve been using the contact aware patch when I have a good chunk I can slide over. It does save some time. I’ll be using the sky replacement too, after I’m done with the lines. I’ve already done a number of other photos and because the sky that day was literally white fir a good part of the day, I’ve been using sky replacement, either Photoshop’s or Luminar’s depending on which looks better. I think Photoshop’s does a better job most of the time and the ability to put the sky on different layers is very convenient.

Yes, camera raw and Lightroom has a geometry section that allows a number of correction to the horizontal and vertical planes. You tend to lose some of the image to clipping so it sometimes isn’t desired. I do a lot of keystone correction manually using the Transform - Distort tool along with compositing different sections.

Maybe you're better with SnapHeal than I am...but I just did a quick test on those powerlines and the results were awful. I've never really liked any results from SnapHeal though. I would rather spend the time in Pixelmator (since I dont have Photoshop).

Just an aside, but I think the image would be stronger if you were to crop out the building on the right edge that's about the same color as the house on the right. Just sayin'.

Yes, I figured I would be cropping the right side when I took the shot. Not sure if I can composite anything else there, probably not, but I’ll look through other photos. Besides the lines, cars parked in front are always a possible problem when trying to photograph these old homes. That section is very busy with trucks and cars since it butts against the back of the Washington St. Mall.

Well, I gave TouchRetouch a try and the results were pretty much the same as other apps I've tried. I used my Apple pencil and made several attempts using different line sizes but the results were all the same. Here's the last attempt:

That’s my plan at this point. I was just curious to see if anything new was available with all this new AI technology in photo editors. Same for deblurring AI. I’m a mediocre photographer, at best, and have been patiently waiting for Adobe to put out the deblurring tool they showcased a few years ago.
