First time I've seen one of these in NYC

I was at the right place at the right time with a camera on Wednesday. I was up near the E 90th St. ferry landing and was walking around a bit while waiting for a connecting boat. This guy (or girl) landed on one of the supports of the Sanitation Dept. facility up there and stood there for 30-40 seconds, looking around. Maybe it's a good spot for fishing? My brother thought it might be a blue heron.

Looks like a blue heron to me.
We used to have one at our old house.
It would sit on our roof. Let me just say, big bird=big poo. Feet long white streak on our dark roof. Took forever to wash off from the rain.
It also had no fear of our two big Rhodesia Ridgebacks, that roamed the pasture.

You can answer your own question about the fishing. How deep is the water there? These birds fish mainly where the water is less than 4 feet deep.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

The water depth varies regularly, since it’s the East River. This area where the heron landed is not far from Ward’s and Randall’s and Roosevelt Islands.

Great blue heron looks to be. We have them in the middle of the city up in Boston, too.

We see one around the creeks here, gliding across the water following its path.

I love watching them take off from the river banks; they are almost completely silent when in flight. amazing.
