Before I take the plunge and sign up at the iTunes store I'm wondering if
someone can tell me if what I want to do with what I download is
possible or not, and if so, how to go about it.

What I would like to do is download a few songs and, using Toast 6, burn them
onto a CD to play in my car.

Is that possible/permissible - or not? And if it is, is it just a matter of dragging the
songs from iTunes into Toast or what?

You can burn right from iTunes

iTunes has its own burner built in; you can create a playlist and burn it directly from the program. You can also use Toast if you want; at least I used to do that -- nowadays, my iPod carries everything I listen to. At any rate, it's easy enough from iTunes to burn a CD.

As for permissible, sure. You've bought the music and you can burn the CD. I know iTunes tracks how many times you burn a song, but in all my years of using it, I've never run into a limit.

In the beginning it was ten discs (now lower) burns were allowed, but all you have to do is change the song order to burn another batch.

The only advantage of using Toast over iTunes is CD-Text (did Toast 6 offer CD-Text? I know Toast 7 and 8 have it). CD-Text embeds the artist name and song info into the files so your CD player will scroll the track info like an iPod if it is CD-Text aware.

iTunes did better burns back then, because if I remember right, Toast 6 makes you convert and save the files first (Import) from Mp3 to aiff before burning to CD, iTunes does it all in one step behind the scenes.

There is no "Burn Disc" button at the bottom of my iTunes window! (Like the one shown in jdc's example above.)

What now?

You can only burn from a playlist, not from the main list, as I recall

FWIW I believe iTunes ALSO burns CD-TEXT into the track -- at least it showed up correctly on my car stereo as I recall (before it got stolen, that is -- *sniff*). It doesn't mention this ability but I believe it's there.
