YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Cooking chickens in a Yellowstone hot spring landed three people in hot water.

A park ranger heard that a group with cooking pots were hiking toward the park's Shoshone Geyser Basin. The ranger found two whole chickens in a burlap sack in a hot spring. A cooking pot was nearby, Yellowstone spokeswoman Linda Veress said.

"Make dinner," said defendant Eric Roberts, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, when asked Thursday what the group was up to in the Yellowstone backcountry.

Well, at least it’s not the usual tomfoolery. Most people who get creative in the geyser basin just end up cooking themselves.

They didn’t get a chance to make it that far.

“ people who get creative in the geyser basin just end up cooking themselves”

Shoshone Geyser Basin is the location for the most disturbing such story that I know of. A group of friends skied in as a blizzard was on the way. They were partying (some tripping) on the first night and one disappeared for several hours and returned horribly burned. No evacuation or medical help for several days due to the blizzard.

Read about it here:

There are lots of better places to soak.

In Iceland they are allowed to dig holes and they bake bread. They may allow cooking other things but that is all I saw. I don't think the break baking is for households, however.

So they were doing a chicken sous vide?

What's the water quality like, there?

Doesn't Yellowstone have sulfur springs?

Are there fresh water springs as well?

I wonder if the chickens were in some other wrap beside burlap.

It would be exposed to bacteria, unless it dies when cooler than the spring.

They all got off too easy, though.

“ sulfur springs? ”

Some are, many are not. Some are radioactive.

“ exposed to bacteria “

Definitely a concern. A very wide range is possible; some organisms that aren’t found anywhere else. Naegleria fowleri has been found in some area hot springs.

I college, we did research on layered microbial mats in Yellowstone and we had an off-trail permit. We may have hardboiled some eggs in the hot springs.
