Washing machine - deals?
Posted by: Rain

Our Maytag is about to go to the curb. Just done with it.
Looking for a large capacity washing machine to replace it with. Are yall happy with what you've got and/or are there any black friday deals coming up I should look at?

(no Samsung. No front loaders.) Prefer agitator vs impeller.

Thanks
Rain

Let me be the first to say...where the hell have you been, Rain? I hope everything's okay.

BTW, can't help you with the washer.

New Orleans performing 4 nights a week on Bourbon Street for the past decade. Govt shut us down March 16th. Tested positive for COVID 19 on March 20th. Was in bed till April 25th when I finally tested negative. (and positive for antibodies). Since then I've had over 200 shows and festivals cancelled. (we were able to go to East TX three weeks ago and play two shows and I had a festival on the MS Gulf Coast the following Saturday). I miss my band mates and being on stage but its been really nice (and healthy) not drinking and being with my family!

My business partner with the Audio/Video/Lighting design and install company passed away suddenly August 5th. (so I've been scrambling to get a new LLC up and profitable)

Other than that - I'm dealing with a few lingering effects from having an early strain of the virus. I had every typical symptom but shortness of breath, so I was never in the hospital or on a ventilator. Lingering fatigue, hair loss, OTC sinus meds do nothing for me anymore, & muscular pain between my shoulder blades depending on how long Im on my feet or a chair. (or bed sometimes)

BUT I AM STILL ALIVE! (sorry I've been away) Thanks for asking about me!

OH yea - AND we just had Hurricane Zeta two weeks ago... so I've tarped the roof. Put up temporary fencing. And cleaned up what we could in the yard.

Power is back on and stable. Front door finally dried out enough to where it shuts correctly now. Insurance Adjuster came by to see it all last Thursday so hope we hear from insurance company by Monday.

Have a bunch of big trees that need to be cut and hauled out. And need a new roof and new fence.

my suggestion - get a basic Whirlpool top load, preferably with mechanical controls. Buy it used and it will cost you around $150-$200 and will last as long as a new one.

Jeez, you've been through quite a bit. Glad to hear you're getting healthy. Good luck with all that...and with the washer hunt. We have a front-loader, which you've eliminated from your search.;)

Samsung and LG are both no go for sure. We had a Fisher&Paykel that was supposed to be the best and it lasted 2 years.

If you're 86ing Maytag, then Whirlpool/HotPoint/Kenmore is the best answer. GE/Amana would be second.

Almost every area has a retired guy who buys up broken appliances people don't want to mess with. For these guys, they are simple to fix and parts are pretty cheap. The ones you buy from these guys have been gone through and checked. Get an older simpler one and that guy can keep it going for a long time (or you can.) These are probably in the $200-400 range.

We upgraded our early '80s Maytag (felts under tub wore out) to a later '80s Maytag that our local appliance dealer had refurbished. Runs great, as all those four-decade old Maytags do.

Appliance guy says nothing these days is any good. Best bet new is a Speed Queen. They have a home line, but draw on their commercial technology. That's what he says.

Good to see you again, Rain. Glad you were able to hang in there through the Year From Hell.

Personally, no way I'd buy one of the current units that are not only overpriced, but also take forever to not clean your clothes. Find a good used appliance shop (they have to be all over NOLA) and get a rebuilt 90's model. You can probably get a few bucks off you old unit as a trade-in.

What the other posters said...used, standard top-loading washing machine, Whirlpool, with central agitator.
