It's Veterans' Day in the USA, honoring all who have served in the Armed Forces.

In the Commonwealth of Nations it is Remembrance Day, honoring all those
members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. [en.wikipedia.org]

And yesterday, 10 November marked the 245th anniversary of the founding of
the Continental Marines, the forerunner of today's U.S. Marine Corp. [en.wikipedia.org]

In Massachusetts it's a legal holiday once called Armistice Day -- later called Veterans Day. Either way it was a political attempt to provide vets with a public solace in lieu of any actual help.

Our treatment of veterans has always been despicable. Use them and then forget them has been the watchword throughout administrations of all stripes.

God and the soldier we adore,

in time of danger, not before

The danger passed, and all things righted,

God is forgotten and the soldier slighted

Mass has some of the best veterans services around, at least in the New England states. I know, because in many bordering states, their residents will avail themselves of the better services here. Housing, mental health, physical health, etc. are all more substantial in MA and probably not good enough, if looked at as a society's obligations.

Thank you for putting the spirit of the OP back on track.
