Capybara. But someone would need to feed it and that's not me. I'd rather a neighbor had one and I can play with it and feed it when they're on vacation.

Much like owning a very large amateur telescope. You want to know someone who has one, but not own one yourself.

Same here. Basically if it can be calm when it is time to be calm and is affectionate, I'm cool with it. An otter or two might be nice, especially the larger species.

I think tame capybaras can be had relatively easily, but I don't know if anyone in the US is breeding them. A pool, lake, or pond would seem to be a prerequisite of owning one, but on the other hand they're (unless I'm much mistaken) grazing herbivores so feeding them shouldn't be a problem.

I loved the tame raccoon that was featured in the movie, My Side of the Mountain and to my utter amazement, that raccoon lived down the block. There was a family that had a bunch of cages in the back yard that held several 'actor' animals and this raccoon was one of them. I was six years old and I just couldn't understand whey they wouldn't let me play with him. He was mean and bites they said. But I saw the movie and I knew better!

I was upset for years over that.

There was a skunk on my Idaho place that was quite tolerant of me. It would walk within a few feet of where I was sitting and check me out. A couple of times I disturbed it at close range while it was hanging out in the woodpile. It came out, looked at me, and went back in. I didn’t see him this year.

Not as much, no. But I'd definitely prefer a female, male giraffes can be very aggressive.
