i am in need of a good reputation 4-6gTB portable hard drive for my stills.

ideally, i would purchase two and one would be the backup.

currently, i have a pair of 2TB gtechs but i have nearly filled them.

and, of course, i need them now/yesterday/very soon but will probably get a better "deal" if i wait two weeks for black friday.

I've always liked and had good luck with the WD My Passport line.

That’s funny. I just got an email from Microcenter that advertises a 256 GB USB 3.1 thumb drive for $20 with a 2 year warrantee.

That would be a lot of photos.

They are all the same.

Pop over to costco/sams/walmart/BB and buy whatever they have on sale? Prob $100-110 for 5 TB. maybe $10-15 less for 4TB.

Speaking of Costco, they have full size 8TB for $120, the seagates with the extra ports on the front... handy if you need them. [www.costco.com]

You can get a 5TB 'portable' 2.5-inch based external HD for $110-$130 (not including tax) at most big retailers. The choices these days seem to be limited to either WD or Seagate.

And I wouldn't trust either of them to go 3 years without dying. Get the one with the best warranty and back it up.

i went with two WD 5TB Passport USB 3.2 Gen 1 from B&H-$115 each, free ship and no tax via payboo.

it will be here tomorrow so that accounts for something.

and i took ka jowt's thoughtful suggestion and purchased via B&H which is local to me here in NYC rather than the Big A.

True enough... but a warranty only gets you a new refurb drive tehy replace it with. Data is still gone.

Im assuming you *needed* these to be portable all the time? The are much slower than desktop class.

Based on our customer feedback and testing, you need to be choosy when looking for a drive that large these days. I wouldn't say all major brand drives are interchangeable. From our knowledge base:

Avoid disks that use Shingled Magnetic Recording

Several years ago Seagate introduced Shingled Magnetic Recording(link is external) to increase the storage capacity of rotational hard drives, but at the expense of writing performance. We anticipate considerably worse performance for APFS in particular on these devices. Many vendors have not been particularly forthright about the use of SMR in their devices until recently. Some devices that leverage SMR include:
