The search function in Mail is just terrible on this Mac running Catalina.

I tried to identify an email - from yesterday - in Mail via the find. I knew who the sender was, and no matter how I put his name or email in the search field, it did not come up.

So I went back and sorted through it manually, and sure enough it was still in my inbox.

This is not the first time.

Any help? I look online, and the support comments are not very helpful, so I thought I'd ping the great MRF hive mind.

At this point, I COULD move to Outlook as an interim solution for my work exchange email, but I have all of my mailboxes set up in Mail so I'd prefer to get Mail working for all of my personal stuff.

When I tried to set up Outlook email the other day, it wanted me to install Office 360. Don’t know if there is a workaround.

I have the latest Outlook and Office365, so I will just use that for my work email.

I have a personal laptop still running Mojave for my non-exchange emails.

I normally keep work and personal separate, but sometimes people send me work emails to my personal email accounts so I do check those once or twice a day for work.

I had issues earlier with some 32 bit software and Catalina, and I asked - cannot get access to older Mac image install with Mojave on this work machine.

I guess I'll try the two or three solutions posted here.

Keep in mind, this Catalina Mac is less than 6 months' old, so all issues are from a freshly setup Mac and not from legacy issues from prior OS installs etc.

Rebuild Spotlight indexes.

If that doesn't work then rebuild the mailbox.

Interestingly, the recommended method to quit and restart mail with the shift key pressed - twice - enabled Mail to find this one lost email. I did not even have to restart the computer afterwards, but did it anyway.

I have bookmarked the methods listed to redo Spotlight, will do that if this continues.
