I had my most important presentation of the month, and my work iMac completely crapped out.

I tried to force quit and reboot and it took 20 plus minutes. I tried to print a PDF and it took 10 minutes. Then WebEx performance was so broken up and my mic was creating echos and I finally had to mute and let someone else present.

My IT guy says this had something to do with it.

I think his complaint was about Catalina. It sounds like all of the BigSur downloading essentially caused a denial of service attack on Apple's servers, preventing Catalina's check-ins with the server to verify apps when attempting to launch to be extremely slow or fail.

Ok, exactly what does this mean to me, at home launching apps on my mini running Catalina, apps that I may have used without issue weeks before?

Because at first blush, to someone like me who seldom needs to look under the hood any more, without an internet connection, using Cat at home for 'local' stuff wouldn't be possible.

That can't be right.

never update a mission critical Mac until things are well tested out. and even then, have backups and boot from a clone if things go wrong.

Programmers, and not just Apple, need to stop with all the bells and whistles that 95% of users don't know or care about. The beauty of the MacOS was it's simplicity - it just worked. Now they are sticky stuff in just because of the cool factor or "we have it and they don't". Then when Joe Schmo tries to just check his email or listen to a song or look at Facebook - the whole system crashes.

Someone needs to remind programmers of the KISS principle.

Nothing for the old apps.

But let's say that Microsoft Office Updater has been running quietly in th background and has updated your Office apps to v16.47 from v16.43. Now you've got new apps that need to be verified and can't be.

And if you've set Adobe CC Desktop to automatically update apps, you may have a similar problem.

And let's say you're like the OP and you need to join a Webex meeting. Clicking the link to join will download a fresh copy of the app and that triggers Gatekeeper, too.

Welcome to the age of "you don't own your software." Even with a "perpetual" license, Apple gets to say when you can run your apps.

Hope their new Silicon Macs are better. At least Big Sur comes pre-installed.

Once an application has passed File Quarantine or Gatekeeper, it will be allowed to run normally and will not be verified again.

I guess my problem with kernel panics within 60 seconds of start-up after installing Big Sur was a different problem.

So the days of "Open Anyway" are gone for good?

We were frantically trying to troubleshoot why everyone's machines in the house had become unresponsive at the same time but once they were up we had a huge spike in support tickets due to this. (Not like we didn't already have a ton due to Big Sur.) What a situation that Apple created!!!

There were changes starting with Catalina, but I thought there were settings you could turn on to override Gatekeeper.

But I do not have any Big Sur machines, and there's no way I'm going to put anything from Github etc on a work machine anyway.
