Check your settings, then use Disk Utility to run First Aid, then reboot. Something got changed on your Mac, either accidentally or with a software update.
I've had no problem on 4 different Macs and all 4 have been using every OS since Mavericks. Three are now on Catalina and the 4th is running Big Sur. I have 4 different Desktops set up on each and all are working as designed.
